Stressed for Success

"Lost Time" in the NYPD is when a member of the service needs to leave early or come in late...he or she may ask the boss for "Lost Time" and will then fill out a UF28 used to detail which pool of accrued hours this "Lost Time is to be deducted from.

However...if a cop or detective...or any member of the service were to go deal with certain things...such as when Bobby Simone went to Brooklyn to assist the detective there with a homicide...or when Jill Kirkendall was dealing with issues with her son...or when LT. Fancy was dealing with Lt. Abner...no decent boss would ever ask for a "28" for Lost Time...they would just say...go take care of it. Lost Time is more like "Hey Lieu...I'm taking my kid to the Yankee game this afternoon...can I get Lost Time at noon?" I worked patrol in the early 1980's and we had a lieutenant who would give the whole shift Lost Time if they wanted it...so long as we went across the street to the local watering hole and brought him back a few "tubes" which was a slang for a cardboard soup container the bar had, to put tap beer to go.

There are a couple interesting plot lines here. The one that is totally predictable is a woman who is being victimized by her abusive husband. She has two little kids and he contributes nothing, forcing her to shoplift. Jill takes it upon herself to be positive. She has a naysayer in the department who goes after the guy, with predictable results. The second is a woman in a used clothing shop who risks financial problems to report that she suspected some dresses she bought were stolen. They were very valuable. This leads to the person who owned the dresses. There is a unique dynamic. One total sidelight, having nothing to do with this case, is that Medavoy is absolutely incapable of using humor. He comes off like an idion. I also want to know what "lost time" is. Does it mean going off the clock and not getting paid? Finally, Danny is getting really tiresome. Andy hits it right on the head with, "You spend all day making yourself miserable by trying to solve everyone's problems." I haven't seen anything beyond this, but if he and Diane hook up, it would really bug me.
