Yesterday, the President of the Court, HE Judge Nawaf Salam, met with United Nations Secretary-General, HE António Guterres in New York. During the meeting, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the work of the Court, underscoring its important mandate to clarify the legal aspects of international disputes.  

The International Court of Justice announces the publication of its Catalogue 2023-2024, which details all the titles published since its establishment in 1946 until 31 July 2024, and the New Publications catalogue, which presents the publications released between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024. 

On 8 October 2024, Bolivia filed a declaration of intervention under Article 63 of the Court’s Statute in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel).

The public hearings on the merits in the case concerning Land and Maritime Delimitation and Sovereignty over Islands (Gabon/Equatorial Guinea) concluded today, 4 October 2024. The Court will now begin its deliberation. The Court’s decision will be delivered at a public sitting, the date of which will be announced in due course.

On 1 October 2024, the Maldives filed a declaration of intervention under Article 63 of the Court’s Statute in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel).

In the advisory proceedings concerning the Right to Strike under ILO Convention No. 87, 15 written comments have been filed in the Registry of the Court.

On 12 September 2024, Chile filed a declaration of intervention under Article 63 of the Court’s Statute in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel).

By an Order dated 9 September 2024, the President of the Court extended to 18 November 2024 the time-limit for the filing of the Counter-Memorial of the Russian Federation in the case concerning Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v. Russian Federation)

On 9 September 2024, HE Ms Alexandra Hill Tinoco, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El Salvador, paid a courtesy visit to the International Court of Justice at its seat, the Peace Palace in The Hague. Ms Hill Tinoco was welcomed by the President of the Court, HE Judge Nawaf Salam, and the Registrar, HE Mr Philippe Gautier. During the visit, the Minister expressed El Salvador’s commitment to resolving international disputes through judicial means, dialogue and negotiation, and reaffirmed its support for the ICJ’s role in maintaining global peace and justice.

It is with great sadness that the International Court of Justice announces the passing of HE Mr Nabil Elaraby, a former member of the Court from 2001 to 2006, on Monday 26 August 2024 in Egypt.

In the advisory proceedings on the Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change, 62 written comments have been filed in the Registry of the Court. The public hearings are scheduled to open on Monday 2 December 2024.
