We test and review the Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 employing a PCIe 5.0 interface to surpass the limitations of earlier PCIe 4.0 designs. The new model is built on a single-sided M.2 board and utilizes the Phison E31T controller instead of its predecessor’s E21T. This change, along with the adoption of the latest BiCS8 TLC NAND flash, enables the drive to reach sequential read speeds of up to 10 GB/s and sequential write speeds of approximately 8 GB/s. Although benchmark tests indicate these enhanced throughput rates in theoretical scenarios, practical applications may demonstrate slightly lower performance due to various system-level factors. The design approach emphasizes technical refinement by foregoing a dedicated DRAM cache. The SSD drives are engineered to leverage the Gen 5 interface, achieving data transfer speeds up to 10,300 MB/s. The engineering focus behind these SSDs is to achieve a balance between high-speed performance, cost efficiency, and broad system compatibility. The Exceria Plus series, for instance, is priced at approximately 109 euros for the 1 TB model and 189 euros for the 2 TB model. The drives support advanced features such as TRIM, idle time garbage collection, and other performance optimization technologies that contribute to sustained operation over time.
