GetFTR Enhances Support for Open Access Publishers
In an exciting development for the research community, we are expanding our services for open access publishers.
Researchers tell us that they can find it hard to identify open access content in their discovery tools and may be missing out on articles they are entitled to read. GetFTR employs multiple sources to verify user entitlements and has for some time now included all open access content registered at Crossref. This means that open access publishers can automatically enjoy increased discoverability, as their content is signposted as open access right at the point of discovery. It also ensures that researchers can access the most up-to-date and authoritative version of that content in just one click directly from their discovery tool.*
Researchers will see the GetFTR indicator, which indicates access to open access content, in various research and discovery tools integrated with GetFTR, e.g. ReadCube, APA PsycInfo, Dimensions, and SciFinder.
For those using the GetFTR Browser Extension, the button will also appear on popular platforms such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Google, Web of Science, and Scopus, as well as library discovery services and more.
Retraction and Errata
We also recently launched the retraction and errata enhancement to our core entitlement checking service for publishers. This service flags at the point of discovery whether there have been any updates to the content. We are delighted to share the news that open access content is included in this enhancement, and this will extend to all publishers, regardless of whether they participate in GetFTR or not. Researchers using the GetFTR Browser Extension will automatically see this information and participating GetFTR discovery services have the option of displaying retraction and update buttons next to the entitlements indicator.
Open access publishers do not need to take any action to benefit from either of these enhancements to our service, and we are in the process of reaching out directly to publishers to let them know how they will benefit from GetFTR.
What are the benefits for open access publishers?
A significant advantage of GetFTR for all publishers is the assurance that researchers are directed to the latest version of the content on the publisher’s platform. This feature is especially crucial for open access publishers, as their content often proliferates across the web, making it challenging to maintain consistent versions. Whilst many publishers maintain up-to-date errata and retraction information on their own sites, GetFTR’s retraction and errata enhancement enables discovery tools to flag any updates to the published article at the point of discovery, ensuring researchers have access to the most accurate information even before they read the article.
Dianne Benham, Director of Product for GetFTR emphasizes the importance of this development:
“We are committed to ensuring researchers have the best possible experience. We believe supporting all open access publishers by clearly signposting information about their content and by ensuring the researcher is provided with the latest version makes it easier for the researcher as they navigate scholarly communications. These developments will ensure researchers can easily discover and access open access content whilst having all the necessary information about the integrity of the document in one place.”
With this expansion, GetFTR continues to enhance the research experience, making it easier for scholars to find, access, and trust the academic content they need.
