Setting Static IP Address in Windows

Static IP on Windows :
IP address is an authentic logical identity of a system connected in a network. All the systems used these IP addresses to locate another systems in different sub-domains. IP address can be assigned dynamically by DHCP server, as well as by administrator. DHCP server assigns a dynamic IP, which can be changed, but a manually assigned IP cannot be changed, until the administrative controls are accessed to configure it. 

By default, a Windows based machine is configured to use IP address, subnet mask and DNS server address assigned by the DHCP server. But, settings provided under the Control Panel can be used to assign a Static IP address, associated subnet mask and DNS server address. IP address and subnet mask can be used to determine the network of system and assigned DNS server address is used by system to access network resources using domain names. 

Below listed steps can be followed to assign static IP address on Windows based machine:  

Step 1 - 
Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Center  

To start with assigning a static IP address on a Windows machine, Control Panel needs to be accessed as illustrated in the below provided screen-grab. From the various settings offered by it, Network and Internet needs to be selected. Further, Network and Sharing Center setting needs to selected. 

Step 2 -
Network and Sharing Center → Change Adapter Settings  

After opening the Network and Sharing Center, ‘Change Adapter Settings’ needs to selected. This option is provided in the left of the screen as illustrated below.  

Step 3 -
Further opening the Adapter Settings, all the available adapters on the system will be displayed and static IP can be assigned to any one of it. These adapters can be of both physical and virtual machines. Properties of these adapters is required to be accessed for assigning the Static logical address. 

Step 4 -  
Select Adapter → Right Click → Properties

Select any of the available adapters and right click on it. Various options will be displayed and select the properties option from it.  

Step 5 -
Adapter Properties → Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)→ Double Click  

Further, properties panel will be opened for the selected network adapter and current settings of it will be displayed. From it, double click on the ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’.  

By selecting this property of network adapter, static IP version 4 address is assigned with appropriate subnet mask and DNS server address. This settings is mostly used by organizations to configure systems in their internal network. 

Step 6 -
In this step, select the ‘Use the following IP address’ option and assign the static IP address, subnet mask, default-gateway address and DNS server address to the system. Click on OK and the logical address will be successfully assigned.
