HUTCHINSON — Great Bend's two-time 5A qualifier Zoey Mayberry (546, 193-162-191) advanced to the March 5 state bowling championship in Thursday's Hutchinson 5A bowling regional.
Mayberry, who has earned sixth and 13th medalist honors at state bowling, posted two solid games with a 162 in the middle game.
"My first game was good, but I fell apart second game. You have to keep adjusting because the lanes keep changing," Mayberry said. "I moved my marks inside. Overall, I was pretty confident against good competition."
Zoey Mayberry performed like a champion in Baker games with a trio of strikes to end one game and additional strikes and spares during her eight frames.
"You always want to make it to state with a goal of top 20, hopefully top 10 ideally," she said. "I've thrown a good shot at the state site."
Returning state qualifier Brooklynn Mayberry (487, 158-189-140) provided the day's biggest surprise after a stressful 15-minute delay for final results.
Despite shooting 140 her third game, Mayberry qualified for state by one pin edging Hays High's Loucinda Meade (486) and Maize South's Kenzie Kalb (486) for an individual state berth.
"I didn't think I made it. I was upset because I didn't think I'd hear my name," she said. "When I heard my name, I was pretty excited, almost in tears. It'll feel amazing to bowl at state with my sister there for support."
Great Bend Panther regional runner-up Josh Manning qualified for 5A state with a career-best 704 series off scores of 266-173-265. After an open second frame, Manning delivered 11 strikes for a career high 266 first game. He finished with a 265 third game.
"I stayed excited, but kept my head up without getting ahead of myself over my score," Manning said. "Bowling is a mental sport. I stayed away from looking at my scores. I had minor adjustments. Mostly, I rolled with my shot and stayed with it. At a low 700s, I bowled my game and got a little bit lucky. My heart rate was maybe 200, but I stayed calm."
Great Bend's girls, a two-time defending 5A state champion, missed qualifying for state behind Wichita Carroll, Goddard Eisenhower and Salina South. The Panthers finished fifth overall after series games of 630-594-639.
The regional featured seven of the top 20 state medalists, including Salina South's 2023 state champion Rylee Lambeth.
