In my opinion DataDog offers a broad suite of products for observability which can easily be integrated with different providers. For AWS you can simply install a CloudFormation Template which then allows DataDog to access logs from your account. The user interface is pretty easy to use and also offers non-technical people an overview to the most important metrics. Integrating notification services such as Slack is also doable with a few clicks and allows you to send alerts to your teams' slack channel to have them notified instantly so they do not need to have a glance on DataDog every day. DataDogs pricing is sometimes not really clear for us and for some services we just had to wait for a month to pass so we can see how much another service really costs. While you can see what everything costs on their pricing page, this sometimes leaves questions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I think Datadog is a must if you want to make sure that your product is performant and reliable. The fact that we can find and fix bugs before our users ever interact with our users is such a crazy advantage. The amount of helpful data that datadog provides with little to no setup is amazing. The team has built a great product and I am looking forward to upcoming features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The one disadvantage that Datadog has is that is very much built for power users. Terms like APM and RUM are so niche and difficult for new users to understand that datadog themselves had to build a whole learning/certification system in order to get people up and running in their system.
If Datadog wants to target users that are not engineers or data scientists - I believe that they will have to start rethinking their product from a UX/UI point of view. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I like that the gui is user friendly, theres alot about datadog that is easy to use. The search bar is pretty helpful when looking fro items, theres alot that can br brought into datadog. New features always available Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The documentation on setting things up i feel like is a little hard to understand. Sometomes we figure out that we need an upgrade to use the next feature but the docs dont necessarily say that. Theres alot that chnages from one version to the next it would be nice for there to be a guide Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Datadog has a multitude of useful features and integrations for our applications, from metrics and monitoring, to dashboards and cost optimization.
Our dedicated support team is readily available to assist us in adoption of any new features and tools for our applications.
Many of the monitoring and observability tools offered by the platform are easily integrated into our applications, especially those migrated to Kubernetes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Some features are not as easily navigable and intuitive as one would hope; fortunately, our dedicated DataDog team is receptive to such feedback and always offers alternative solutions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The UI is incredibly easy to work with. Creating widgets and dashboards is straightforward, with a wide range of tools at your disposal, plenty of templates and excellent documentation. We were able to prototype and iterate on our dashboards incredibly quickly and even complex visualisations were simple to setup.
We chose Datadog to quickly spin up a centralised monitoring stack capable of sharing our metrics with our external partners. Datadog made it very easy to implement this, with a straightforward agent install and pre-built integrations with many of our existing tools (NGINX, Kubernetes, etc). Once we had metrics consumed from our agents, we were then able to share our metrics with our external partners very easy, managing this process with ease. Datadog is now a central part of both our internal and external monitoring, as such it is used on an hourly basis by everyone from heads of department to engineers to support staff - each with a specific dashboard suited to their needs. Datadog's customisability and adaptability is simply great.
One of the things I have been most impressed with has been Datadog's support team. Through the UI, it is very easy to speak to customer support and the process is streamlined and effective. I have made use of this frequently both when seeking guidance on additional features and searching for support with an unplanned outage. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The pricing model can be hard to understand, particularly when dealing with custom metrics which can be hard to account for with their varied labels/tags. It would be great to get some kind of quote calculator so we can figure out how much a change is going to cost us before we implement it. Similarly, the rolling windows within which things are calculated can make assessing cost, on anything less than a month-to-month basis, difficult.
The access control for shared, external dashbaords could be improved. Currently, the Magic Link process does not give user-based access control. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Update 2024 - spend is still unpredictable:
We've since spent some more time evaluating Datadog. The solution is great, almost everything we'd need integrated under one roof. However, there's still no predictability around spend. I asked them if I could pre-commit to a certain number of hosts, and the answer was " "Any additional host you bring on will be an additional charge." This doesn't work for me as I need a fixed infra budget, and I can't have Datadog charging for random hosts we boot up for 2 days.
The competitor I'm now using has a very reasonable pricing scheme: baseline platform fee with a certain number of hosts / units, then a flexible budget that can be shared across all features or a per-feature budget. When you get close to the budget you get a warning, then it's dropped. Super reasonable and straightforward.
Original 2023 review:
We could not fully evaluate DataDog because they charged us for 50 hosts inadvertently sending metrics for 2 days out of the month. This was our mistake - we accidentally deployed the DataDog agent to an entire tier, not realizing this would incur charges. We rolled this back when we discovered the issue. There appears to be no way of having DataDog drop metrics from agents. You have to physically remove those agents.
However, despite multiple conversations over the month with their sales team and support, explaining we did not want to monitor those hosts, they charged us for an entire month of usage.
The DataDog product looks great and we were excited to evaluate it. However, I now have to justify a month's worth of spend without getting value for it, which is an unfortunate place to be. Given the lack of support in helping us resolve this deployment mistake and the resulting billing issue, I also am not sure how much support I'd get down the road. As described in the previous section, the lack of support resulting in us not being able to resolve a deployment mistake and resulting billing issue. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Datadog is good at getting the veriables for the testing with most working riht away
Other programs something require editing.
Record and playback as expected Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Some Step recorded can't be edited only recorded again
This is an isssue if the veriable is a ID number that might change over time.
Example a drop down list get an added item.
Datadog no live playback only after the fact so one has to wait to see why somehting failed
Some pages are not update in real time (30 minute delay)
22 second run time test takes over a minute to show results and page doens't autorefresh Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Datadog's UI/UX is so well designed and has so many features. Easy to configure and monitor our springboot applications, not just application but server statistics also.
We can also assign alerts on slack and other platforms as per our requirement and needs.
It also provides us to monitor logs and cpu proccess, custom metrices are easy to create.
We can design our own dashboards as per the need.
Customer support is also good. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The costing plans of Datadog are bit expensive Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Its features of tracing and APM. It has made troubleshooting errors in the code far easier. It also connects to a wide variety of languages and operating systems. The filtering system that Datadog has built in is rather handy for finding monitors, dashboards, and events. The Watchdog AI is a helpful tool in spotting pattern you may not have noticed in your applications before, and its breakdown of the pattern and possible causes is helpful in narrowing down root cause. The monitors are simple to implement and can be linked with ServiceNow and Pagerduty rather easily. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
We wish there was better admin management tools for pushing out updates and giving alerts on a more timely fashion that upgrades are necessary. Communication of these changes could be a little more timely as well. Instrumentation for projects has also gotten more complex than when we first started, but it can be understandable given how much Datadog has grown. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The UI is about the best interface I've seen for a data rich product. Their UI team clearly spends a ton of time getting into the very fine details of how the interface should respond in an intuitive way, as I'm always finding small little bits of joy that make it really easy to use.
The product also "just works" out of the box with a bunch of the managed AWS services we use at my company. I would not be nearly as confident in our cloud infrastructure without Datadog to let me know what's happening! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There are some newer features that AWS released that I would like to see supported in Datadog's product--I have submitted a feature request but it has been pretty slow to get some of those updates made. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Datadog's products integrate seamlessly both with each other and with our other vendors giving us a centralized view of all of the metrics we need to monitor and improve our software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Only downside is cost. Datadog is the industry leader and they know it! Custom metrics pricing should be revisted as it can escalate very quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
1. Super user friendly, I learnt Datadog directly via hands on. Site is super user friendly and easily understandable
2. Quick creation of synthetic tests, alert creations, monitoring,
3. Easily integratable with ServiceNow, PagerDuty, MS Teams etc.
4. Dashboard- Can have unified dashboard accross all the monitors- synthetic, logs, API, RUM etc.
5. Good log monitoring capabilities and indexing for quick searches
6. Most imp, amazing service- customer support
7. DD dashboards are super helpful and all my colleagues have it as their home page
8. Integration implementation is super quick as they have various integrators readily available for plug and pay
9. For syntheitc tests, you can set frequency, country, browser, timezone etc set for good and extensive testing Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
1. Usually their turn over on the enhancement request could be a quarter
2. Customization if you have very speicifc scenarios
3. Multi factor authentication cannot be achieved
4. In Synthetic monitoring, the tree cases cannot be achieved like if else condition Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Datadog is a great tool for easy monitoring of production and development events.
Easy to implement with other softwares like Github,Aws,Azure,Cassandra, etc.
It can be frequently used to track and trigger multiple events and logs.
Great customer support available via chatbot, emails, call and slack. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There are a lot of benefits of Datadog but few points need to be noted:
1. The storage and consumption of data is costly.
2. Beneficial only for large organizations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Easy to use, great functionality for monitoring backend apps. Scales well for applications under big loads Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Because of it's pricing model, sometimes you pay for things you are not using. Easy to forget you have loads of metrics on some forgotten apps generating cost. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
- Fairly easy to get started with
- SDK for pretty much every popular language
- Supports everything from performance monitoring to logging
- Fast customer support
- Fantastic documentation
- Straightfoward integration Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
- Confusing UI
- The docs is expansive but finding things can be hard at times
- Instead of learning another DSL, I'd prefer to use SQL to query my logs Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
datadog provides massive amounts of data to generate insights into your system health. the support around datadog is fantastic, as there is always someone to share their time and experience with you. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
while it is great for looking at metrics, i feel it lacks use for business monitoring. i would like more direct database queries to provide real time response situations for failures. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The best thing about Datadog is its ease of use and how well its individual product capabilities are integrated with each other. Datadog is used every day by almost everyone on our engineering team and is often mentioned as one of the favorite tools we have available. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Our developers love using Datadog and adopting all of its features. This requires a good cost governance strategy to make sure costs don't spiral out of control. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Being able to have tedious task like Log Managment be dealt with, in an efficient way. Ease of use and ease of Integration is a big plus. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Cost is a major drawback. While it might be justifiable for large enterprises with significant budgets, for small to medium-sized businesses or startups, the cost can be prohibitive. The charges accumulate quickly, especially as you add more hosts and services. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Simplicity in setup, its very easy to create things like a regular upcheck and have it sent to your alerting channel of choice Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I find it doesn't have as many features as its competitors do for our purposes. We use datadog as part of a suite of services rather than a one-stop-shop Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
integrates with different environments/applications, a lot of great integreations Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Hard to find material for each specific case. Would like to see more examples how to work with different types of OS, different types of logs. Would like to see a separate session on the best tagging approach, to be able to link traces, logs, issues, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I really enjoy the fact that I can see so much details about my organization from each component offered by DD. The ability to see so much in one place has allowed us to become more proactice, than reactive to situatiuons. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I do have a hard time building things out that I want, but that could just be lack of knowledge still, overall my least favorite thing would just be some things are very complex, but i do think if i was better with the application those complexities would be beneficial Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The easy integration with our systems. The customizable dashboards and realtime email notifications to my team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I haven't found a way to integrate SMS notifications when a system goes down. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
All the information is centralized in one fully customizable tool with good documentation and hot dashboards. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Upon first contact with it, it can be hard to understand the best usage of all the possibilities and customize the integration with it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Distributed tracing is pretty great. Also, the dashboarding is great. Also, DD is always innovating and bringing new offers to market. Synthetics have proven to be pretty powerful addition to our workflow and has saved us a ton of setup. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Pricing strategy has us constantly on our toes to manage cost. Leaning into Config as Code would be helpful, and allow us to commit our synthetics to version control and push via CI. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Their adaptability. At oine point they didn't have open telemetry options for the product, but then eventually added it on a year or two later Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Pricing lol. It can get pretty heavy handed. Also support hasn't been the best compared to other products i've used in the past. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Statistics and sessions, my main doing, are to my liking, it describes well enough. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It's not nice to replace all every typing field as asteriks, i just want the passwords to be hidden, not the other ones. Hiding message details and email of users somehow blocks the view to address the problem directly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
