These four chapters comprise the most valuable portion of the book, offering a splendid introduction to the various textual stages between an author's manuscript and a printed (or reprinted) book, and providing an excellent overview of the customary practices and techniques of Victorian writers and printers as they were affected by such developments as improved mechanical typecasters, changing techniques in creating stereotype plates, and the increasingly common use of steam-powered platen and cylinder printing machines.
