A lot of people came alone, and it was interesting to contemplate what
tsuris in their lives had brought these successful single yuppies to get out of bed on Sunday morning and go to church by themselves.
To the uninitiated, it's hard to understand why all the
tsuris. As a citizen of the Free World, I consider it my God-given right to ignore any newspaper story I damn please.

Reading this article ("
Tsuris," January/February 2013) evoked a memory of a novel I read about 40 years ago by Wallace Markfield, called To An Early Grave.
In Sunday's New York Times Book Review, in the course of reviewing Toure's new book on "post-black" identity, Orlando Patterson wrote, "This sounds remarkably like a black version of what Alan DershoA-witz calls 'the
Tsuris Theory of Jewish Survival,' in which assimilated American Jews desperately need external troubles and imagined enemies to maintain their identity."
