Tsaritsyn

The Volgograd State Panoramic Museum of the Stalingrad Battle was first opened on 3 January 1937 as the Museum of the Defense of Tsaritsyn. It was renamed in 1982.

Perhaps because Gershenzon's mood remained sour, the conversation soon turned to another priest, Sergey Trufanov, or hieromonk Iliodor of Tsaritsyn, the most seditious priest on the Russian religious and political scene.

The city has had three names: founded as Tsaritsyn in 1589, rechristened Stalingrad in 1925 and finally renamed Volgograd in 1961.

For example, the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet in July 1919, the Whites' taking of Tsaritsyn in the same month, the French desire to provide more support for the Whites in South Russia and the problems with various Ukrainian factions all pushed and pulled at Bolshevik policy.

The rebels had indeed intended to seize Tsaritsyn, Kazan, and--with the support of people from other regions--capture Moscow.

VOLGOGRAD has, in its 400-year history, experienced three name changes - Tsaritsyn, then, during Stalin's reign, Stalingrad and in 1961 Volgograd, after the river on whose bank it stands.
