The USMA CMS Program is designed to provide documentary evidence for individuals who can qualify as metric specialists because of their education and experience in the use of the modernized metric system--known as SI (systeme international d'unites).

Since the dominant system in use in science as well as in international commerce is the modern metric system known as the International System of Units (universally abbreviated SI from the French name Systeme International d'Unites), the first six articles revolve around six of the seven base units of the SI: the meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela, which are the units for length, mass, time, electric current, thermodynamic temperature, and luminous intensity, respectively.

The name Systeme International d'Unites (International System of Units), with the international abbreviation "SI," is the modern metric system.

SI, the Systeme International d'Unites, is no more than an extension of the centimeter/gram/second (CGS) system proposed in 1873; the meter/kilogram/second (MKS) system proposed in 1901; and the meter/kilogram/second/ampere (MKSA) system proposed in 1950.
