CARDIFF-BASED student Jonathan Lavers has his eyes firmly fixed on the Greek island of Rhodes this summer.

But while most of his fellow Uwic students might have booked holidays in the sun, Lavers has his attention fixed on winning medals for his country.

Gibraltar 400m sprinter Lavers will be taking on athletes from the Cayman Islands, Channel Islands and Bermuda in the Island Games sponsored by NatWest Bank.

Two years ago, when the Games were held in the Shetlands, Lavers won a silver medal in the 4x400m relay.

And the foursome are determined to make it gold this time around although Lavers admits it won't be easy.

"We were beaten by Guernsey, a team which included GB international 400m runner Dale Garland," said Lavers.

And Lavers believes he is coming into form at just the right time.
