This eighth planet orbits the star known as Kepler-90.

The latter, a scorching, rocky mass 30 per cent larger than Earth, is the eighth planet found to be orbiting the same star.

In 1846, Urbain Leverrier in France, and John Adams in England used Newton's gravitational laws to independently predict that variations in the orbit of Uranus were due to the influence of an eighth planet. Soon after, the Berlin Observatory found the predicted planet and named it Neptune.

On September 23, 1846, J G Galle of the Berlin Observatory officially confirmed the existence of an eighth planet using a set of co-ordinates passed to him by the French astronomer Urbain Jean Le Verrier.
