For a long time during his heyday, George Michael was one of the biggest stars in the music industry. He reached fans all around the world, but he was always especially beloved in the United Kingdom, his home nation. Years after his death, fans are still supporting the pop icon, and this week he scores a brand new No. 1 hit.
“Careless Whisper” is back on the U.K. charts this week. The tune, which stands as one of Michael’s most famous, can be found on five different rankings at the moment, and it appears as high as a title can climb on several of them.
Michael launches “Careless Whisper” at No. 1 on two charts in the U.K. this frame. The song is new to the top spot on both the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles lists, which track the bestselling releases on those respective types of formats in the country.
The pop-rocker has only managed to place a pair of tracks onto the Official Vinyl Singles chart, and both have risen to No. 1. In addition to “Careless Whisper,” his smash “Freedom” debuted on the vinyl-only ranking in 2015 and spent several turns in charge.
“Careless Whisper” is also new at No. 1 on the ranking of the most-purchased songs on any physical medium, with vinyl sales playing a huge role in almost any tune’s position on that roster. Michael has earned at least five leaders on that chart, along with and additional 15 top 10 hits.
Finally, “Careless Whisper” also tops another tally in the country that made Michael a household name. He posthumously rules the Official Singles Sales chart, though it appears his smash has held the No. 1 spot on that ranking before.
As it hits No. 1 on that trio of charts, “Careless Whisper” is also performing well on two other rankings in the U.K. The track manages to become a top 40 smash once more on the Official Singles Downloads tally, where it settles at No. 39. “Careless Whisper” also returns at No. 69 on the main list of the most-consumed individual songs across the pond.
“Careless Whisper” is surging after it was re-released on vinyl, and many fans of Michaels were quick to get their hands on the new offering when it dropped. The single is now 40 years old, as is “Last Christmas” by Wham!, the duo that pushed Michael to superstar status. Both tunes recently became available on wax to celebrate that milestone.
