FAO in Pakistan

For 2023-2027 FAO has outlined three government priority areas that are guiding FAO's partnership with the Government of Pakistan

1.    Basic Services
2.    Climate Change and the Environment
3.    Sustainable Inclusive Economic Growth and Decent Work

Basic Social Services

FAO is providing support to improve the availability, access, utilization, and stability of food, including ensuring food safety. FAO is specifically assisting in the development and enhancement of nutrition policy and legal frameworks at both the national and subnational levels. Additionally, FAO is working towards strengthening data and information services to facilitate policy planning, implementation, and monitoring in the field of nutrition. It is also providing support to enhance organizational and human capacities within the food and nutrition systems at both national and subnational levels.

FAO is extending specific support to strengthen existing social protection and anticipatory systems and measures. This support is also extending to subsistence-level male and female farmers, aiming to restore and enhance food production and consumption within these communities.

Climate Change and the Environment

FAO is actively contributing to providing support to strengthen national institutional and regulatory frameworks for climate-responsive planning and development. Additionally, FAO is assisting in the establishment and improvement of national and subnational climate information and data systems. It is specifically working to enhance the capacities of national and subnational government institutions in the areas of planning, forest and watershed management, and restoration. FAO is also directly engaging in actions aimed at improving and rehabilitating forestry and rangeland ecosystems.

FAO's role is to assist governance structures in delivering evidence-based oversight of water and land resources at various levels, including provincial, river basin, watershed, and community levels. It is also working towards enhancing the capacities of administrations and communities in vulnerable disaster-prone provinces, enabling them to anticipate and cope with such calamities effectively. FAO is providing support to communities in improving water use efficiency and is focusing on enhancing the sustainable management of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, along with their associated habitats.

Sustainable Inclusive Economic Growth and Decent Work

FAO is focusing on enhancing regulatory and institutional frameworks at both national and subnational levels for agricultural value chains and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This support aims to strengthen the overall resilience of selected agribusinesses and enable value addition, product traceability, and improved quality compliance for specific commodities. FAO is prioritizing initiatives aimed at enhancing trade-related aspects. Another crucial aspect of FAO's support is involving enhancing national and subnational systems for surveillance, detection, and control of major animal diseases, antimicrobial resistance, as well as plant pests and diseases. Furthermore, FAO is focusing on women's economic empowerment in the world of work. It is endeavoring to enhance the agricultural livelihoods of female-headed households, thereby promoting gender equality and inclusivity within the agriculture sector.
