#PIPlanning, or #ProgramIncrementPlanning, is a face-to-face event that serves as the lifeblood of the #ART, or #AgileReleaseTrain. #PIPlanning brings the different teams together, allowing them to gather a shared #vision and #mission to #strive towards.

The #AgileManifesto states, “The most #efficient and #effective method of conveying #information to and within a #development team is a face-to-face conversation.” #PIPlanning, being a #SAFe artifact, takes this to its own #frameworks, creating large-scale #PIPlanning events that align many different teams to a shared #vision. They provide the #benefits of significant return on #investment and ensure stability in large #organizations. This kind of planning allows a way to bring teams together even when it may be difficult to align an entire #ART, instead of supporting the idea that “the people who do the work plan the work.”

#PIPlanning requires a lot of #preparation and #communication between teams and team members, so that the #vision is shared effectively between the different teams. The #RTE, or #ReleaseTrainEngineer, is the #facilitator of the #PIPlanning event, and they bring in all the major players of the #ScaledAgileFramework, namely #BusinessOwners, #AgileTeams, #Stakeholders, and more. They are given #advice and #information they need to be ready for the event when it occurs to ensure smooth sailing. #Organizational readiness, #ContentReadiness, and #LogisticsReadiness, all need to be in #alignment to ensure the smooth sailing of the event, individually coming together to align #strategies and #teams, prepare #management and #development teams, and the individual considerations coming into play for a successful #PIPlanning #event.

#PIPlanning has a standard agenda that includes a #presentation of #businesscontext and #vision, followed by team #planning breakouts, where the teams #create their #plans of continuous, #iterativedelivery, and objectives to be reached during the #ProgramIncrement. This event is facilitated by the #ReleaseTrainEngineer and has all the members of the #ART included, occurring within an #IPIteration. This avoids conflicts with schedule or capacity, and it takes place over two days-- a long time in prospect, but a sorely needed timeframe in practice.
