The Last Drop - Manish Bains

    Chapter 1

    The year 2123

She was breathing heavily ; her breath was getting faster, making my hands more and more deadened. At any instant, my life could be taking turning point.

I could see my daughter sitting next to me in the car. I was driving to my friend’s home, the famous scientist- Chiranjiv Bansal.

Wait for a little more, princess. We are almost there!! I assured my daughter.

In a trembling voice, she answered me, Dad, I don’t want to die. I don’t want to leave you alone.

Her body was pale and, her lips were getting dry like an autumn leaf. She was weeping but tears weren’t coming out. She was suffering from severe dehydration. I realized that human body can’t shed tears in such condition. And it all happened because we humans had finished all the water on earth. Most of it got wasted; the rest wasn’t sufficient to be provided to all over the world.

It all happened steadily in last few decades. The government was not taking essential steps seriously before. And now, when things were out of control, they woke up from the sleep of greed. They started calling other countries for water. But, it was too late. The world had lost almost 90% of its water sources. The rest of the water was in the houses of the political leaders and celebrities. It was the 22nd century. Yet, we humans were incapable of finding the best way to conserve water or create an alternative for water. It was ruination everywhere; the poor were dying in lakhs daily.

My family suffered from it too. Water couldn’t be stored by one for eternity. Yet, I tried my best to preserve an ample quantity of water for my family. My parents already died due to extreme dehydration (they gave their lives for us in reality) a month ago. Eventually, we encountered scarcity of water. Among my wife, my daughter and me we had two choices- either three people survive for two days or two people for six days. My wife sacrificed her share of water and her life for us. For now, I was having only my daughter as family. And her life was in danger too.

We reached Chiranjiv’s house. I parked the car and ran toward the other side of the car. When I opened the car door and tried to pick her up in my arms, she was dead. My heart couldn’t handle that pain; my body fell on the ground. I was screaming and crying, lying there. In the blink of eye, my whole family was gone. I got fainted.

When I opened my eyes, Chiranjiv was sitting beside me. Being covered in sweat, I was lying on the sofa in his drawing-room.

When we heard your screams, we rushed to the lawn and found you unconscious. I’m sorry for your loss. I have never imagined that we have to see such tragedies, Chiranjiv had tears in his eyes.

He hugged me tightly as he knew that my heart got shredded due to deaths of my loved ones. His wife, Samira, got some food for me. The food was nothing but some tablets of vitamins. It’s true that without water on earth, we had no fruits and vegetables. So, the human race had relied on some sealed tablets and capsules, supposed to be swallowed without any water.

So, this is the end now? I asked him with a low voice.

He sighed heavily and then answered.

Parikshit, the most painful thing in this world is to see the reality standing in front of you. And the most heartbreaking part of that reality is the truth that you can’t do anything now. It’s the end!!

There was complete silence in that room. Although it lasted just a few minutes, the three of us experienced like it was for an hour. I could hear the voice of the warm wind blowing the curtains of the room slowly. Its heat was cutting my skin. It was alarming me about the time for the human race to get terminated from this earth. My whole body could feel the fear of the doom of the human race.

Suddenly, Chiranjiv gave me an indication to follow him. When I followed him, we arrived at a laboratory. It was even more unexpected and unrealistic than those Hollywood movie laboratories. Many machines were there, arranged decently in a systematic way. Some of them were making a noise like they were running some algorithm or doing calculations. I gave a glance over the whole lab and then was gazing at Chiranjiv’s face.

I never knew that you are such a brilliant one. There is no doubt why you were awarded so many prizes by the president and other scientific institutions.

I didn’t bring you here to hear your compliments. I want to discuss something with you.

"Ok, Bansal! (I had always called him ‘Bansal’ as this was the best nickname I could think of during my childhood) Tell me what’s your brain thinking about?"

You know, when we were kids, I promised myself to build a device to travel across time.

Don’t say you have invented that, have you? I asked him with a mouth opened with bewilderment.

And that guy just nodded his head with a gentle smile on his face.

See Parikshit, speaking the truth; I should tell you that what I have invented can only go in the past. And, I think this is the ablest opportunity to execute my plan. Listen carefully to me. You will go to the past!! You are the last hope of human life. You’re the last drop of water we need!
