ABOUT THE AUTHOR
DISASTER BEGINS WITH THE MOUTH
Your mouth is your instrument for creating success or failure depending on how you use it because the tongue cannot lie, and whatever it pronounces must surely come to pass, sooner or later. Unless you are in charge of your thoughts, if not, you cannot be in charge of your life. No matter how hard you pray. You cannot live right until you think right. You cannot be great until you think great.
What determines whether speech is virtuous is the mind. What we think determines what we say. In order to control our tongue, we must first cultivate inner virtue. When our mind is disciplined, our speech will be as well. You must be impeccable with your word. The tongue has no bones but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words.
A broken bone can heal, but the wound a word opens can fester forever.
Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character; watch your character, for it becomes your destiny. Life does not control you. Rather, your thought controls your life. Thought is praying because it is made up of spiritual energies. Keep speaking the positive words regardless of your circumstances, and in turn, it will produce spiritual energies that will accomplish your desired goals, for as you speak forth, you transcend to the realm of possibilities.
For example, if you confront a situation or an issue or challenge in life or let us say that you are seeking a job and you have submitted your job application to a company or an organization while waiting for a response for an invitation for a job interview. Now, it happens that two weeks have elapsed and yet you have not received a call from the company. As a result, you start nursing negative thoughts and begin to say that you do not think that you will get that job again. That negative comment will deprive you of getting that job because you have created an atmosphere of negative energy for your job pursuit. ˮ
As long as you think the problem is out there, that very thought is the problem. ˮ You caused the problem for yourself, not Godʼs wish, but you made it happen out of ignorance. Another example is if your son or daughter has done something wrong that you do not like, it is your responsibility as a father or mother to caution him or her diligently with wisdom instead of insulting out of anger by saying things like: you are stupid, you will not succeed in life, God will punish you, you are an idiot, you are good for nothing. These are not mere jokes or idle talk because sooner or later, your son or daughter will become what you called him or her yesterday out of anger. It pays to control your emotions when you are angry rather than allowing your emotions to control you.
Remember that you, as a father or mother, are the visible God to your children, and it is your responsibility to bring them up, to chastise them disciplined as God entrusted them to you as a gift. Your children are your treasure; therefore, you must bring them up disciplined.....which is why the Bible gives counsel......book of Proverbs 22:6 says, ʺ Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. ˮ
On the other hand, the Bible book of Exodus 6:1-4 says Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother
(this is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. The question is, why did God say that children should obey their parents so that it may go well with them and that they may live long in the land? It is simply because their parents, be it father or mother, are the visible God through whom they came into this world, so if they fail to do their part by not obeying and respecting their parents if their parents say anything bad to them out of being displeased by their children behavior, it will manifest upon them sooner or later.
Let us take a look at some Bible chapters:
Proverbs 13:24
Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
Proverbs 1:8
Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching,
Matthew 15:4
For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’
Proverbs 22:15
Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
Proverbs 23:13-14
Hosea 6.5: That is why I will cut them down by means of the prophets. I will kill them with my mouth.
Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.
(Proverbs 13:24)
Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them." All these go a long way to show parents how to discipline their children and also how to be extremely cautious in their choice of words because words possess power.
Sometimes, when we have a problem in our life, we say, How can God allow this? If there is a God in the universe, why did he allow me to get into this terrible accident? Why am I constantly surrounded by verbally abusive people? Why did my child die ?
We become angry with God because we don’t realize that we are co-workers with God—we are the co-creators of our own universe. Why? Because we have set in motion causes (through thoughts or actions )whose effects will return to us as surely as the sun rises every day.
Let’s go back to some Bible verses to see how this issue was addressed with all seriousness. Proverbs 18:21 puts it this way: The tongue has the power of life and death.
The stakes are high. Your words can either speak life, or your words can speak death. Our tongues can build others up, or they can tear them down.
James 3:6 - And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
Matthew 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
Proverbs 25:23 The north wind brings forth rain, and a backbiting tongue, angry looks.
Proverbs 20:19 Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.
Psalm 12:3-4 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, those who say, With our tongue, we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?
Proverbs 15:1-2 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly.
Proverbs 29:20 Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Proverbs 11:9 With his mouth, the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge, the righteous are delivered.
Colossians 3:7-8 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Proverbs 26:27-28 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come
