The Christmas Castle Quest - Lily Starr
Preface
When I first imagined The Christmas Castle Quest , I envisioned a world where magic isn’t just something we search for—it’s something we discover in ourselves and those around us.
The story is set in a place filled with wonder, but its heart lies in the relationships and the lessons the characters learn as they navigate the challenges of the Christmas Castle. Each puzzle they encounter reflects the personal growth we all face in our lives, particularly the importance of friendship, trust, and self-acceptance.
My hope is that this story brings readers on a journey that feels both magical and deeply personal, reminding us all that the most meaningful gifts aren’t material, but are found in our connections and experiences.
Chapter 1: A Snowy Invitation
Ellowyn tugged her coat tighter as the first snowflakes of the season fell around her, dusting the ground in a soft white layer. Winter had come early this year, painting the forest that bordered her small town with frosted tips and whispering winds. She loved the quiet moments before the world grew busy with holiday excitement, but today felt different—like the air held a secret it was waiting to share.
Ellowyn! Wait up!
a voice called from behind. She turned to see Tarin jogging toward her, cheeks flushed pink from the cold. Close on her heels were Kipley, Sola, and Brann, bundled up in scarves and hats. Tarin’s wild hair escaped her hood in frizzy curls, and Kipley grinned, juggling a snowball in one hand.
Where were you rushing off to?
Tarin asked as she caught up, huffing clouds of breath into the cold air.
I wasn’t rushing,
Ellowyn replied, brushing snow from her mittens. I just... felt like something was out here. Something new.
Oh, great. Here comes one of your hunches again,
Kipley teased, tossing his snowball into the air and catching it. Is it treasure this time? Or buried alien technology?
Ellowyn rolled her eyes, but before she could answer, Sola gasped. What’s that?
She pointed toward the forest.
A shimmer caught Ellowyn’s eye. Something fluttered in the wind—a piece of parchment, pale as winter light, tumbling through the air like a lost leaf. It danced and twisted before landing softly on a snow-covered stump, waiting for them as if placed there on purpose.
Did someone lose it?
Brann asked, stepping closer, his brow furrowed.
No way! This feels like a mystery,
Kipley said excitedly, brushing snow off his gloves. I call dibs!
Tarin snatched the parchment before Kipley could grab it. Easy, Kip. Let’s see what it says first.
Ellowyn and the others crowded around as Tarin unfolded the parchment. The paper was smooth and thick, with delicate, swirling letters written in dark ink.
To those seeking adventure,
Tarin read aloud, her voice dropping to a whisper as if the words demanded reverence. Beyond the forest lies a place where winter never ends, where puzzles unfold and mysteries wait. A treasure lies hidden within the Christmas Castle, but only those with sharp minds and brave hearts may unlock its secrets.
Ellowyn’s heart skipped a beat. The Christmas Castle. She had heard stories about it—an ancient place lost in legend, hidden deep in the forest, where magic was said to still linger. But those were just tales told by old folks around fires, right? Surely, the castle wasn’t real... was it?
There’s a map too!
Tarin exclaimed, unfolding the rest of the parchment.
A map sketched in silver ink stretched across the page, showing a path winding through the forest to a spot marked with a tiny drawing of a castle. Below the castle were words written in looping script: Follow the snow, and the castle will find you.
Kipley’s grin widened. I knew it! Treasure hunt!
Ellowyn felt a tingle of excitement run down her spine, mingled with a hint of nervousness. Do you think it’s real?
Only one way to find out,
Tarin said, already pulling her gloves tighter. Let’s go.
Sola hesitated. What if it’s dangerous?
It’s just a forest,
Kipley said, giving her a reassuring nudge. We’ll be fine. And besides, we can’t back out now. This is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure!
Brann adjusted his glasses thoughtfully. If we go, we need to be smart about it. We don’t know what’s waiting for us.
Ellowyn glanced at the map, tracing the path with her mittened finger. It doesn’t look too far. If we follow the creek to the west, it should lead us straight there.
Then it’s settled,
Tarin said, her eyes sparkling. Christmas Castle, here we come!
They set off through the forest, following the path marked on the map. The snow crunched beneath their boots as they walked, and the air was filled with the soft sounds of the forest settling under winter’s spell. The deeper they went, the quieter the world became, as if the forest were holding its breath.
After what felt like an hour of walking, the trees began to change. Their branches stretched higher, draped with delicate icicles that chimed softly in the wind. Snowflakes drifted lazily from the sky, sparkling in the pale light. It was beautiful—like stepping into a snow globe world.
This place is amazing,
Sola whispered, her breath fogging the air.
I think we’re close,
Ellowyn said, glancing at the map again. The castle should be just ahead.
Sure enough, as they crested a small hill, the trees parted to reveal a sight that took their breath away.
There, nestled in a clearing, stood the Christmas Castle. Its towers rose high into the sky, glittering with frost, and its walls shimmered as if made from ice and stone. Snow clung to every ledge and window, and twinkling lights flickered along the edges of the rooftops, casting a warm glow across the snow-covered ground.
It’s real,
Tarin whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.
The castle’s front doors were enormous, carved with intricate patterns that seemed to shift and swirl as the snow settled on them. At the center of the doors was a large emblem in the shape of a snowflake, with a keyhole at its heart.
It looks... locked,
Brann observed, tilting his head.
Of course it’s locked,
Kipley said, bouncing on his heels. What kind of treasure hunt would it be if it were easy?
Ellowyn stepped closer, brushing snow from the emblem. There has to be a way to open it.
Just as she spoke, the wind picked up, carrying with it a faint, melodic sound—a song that seemed to come from the very walls of the castle. It was soft and haunting, like the echo of forgotten carols. The snow beneath their feet shimmered, and words appeared on the ground, written in frost: Solve the riddle, and the doors shall open.
Tarin grinned. Now we’re talking!
The words shifted, forming a riddle:
I fall but never rise, I blanket but never hide. What am I?
Ellowyn’s mind raced. It was a simple riddle, but clever. She thought about the answer for a moment, then smiled.
Snow,
she whispered. It’s snow.
As soon as the word left her lips, the emblem on the door began to glow, and with a soft, musical click, the giant doors swung open. A rush of cold air greeted them, carrying the scent of pine and something sweet, like peppermint.
Well, what are we waiting for?
Kipley said, bouncing on the balls of his feet. Let’s go!
Tarin gave him a playful shove. Easy, Kip. We don’t know what’s inside yet.
Ellowyn stepped through the doors first, her heart pounding with excitement and just a little bit of fear. The others followed close behind, their boots crunching softly on the snow-covered floor.
Inside, the castle was even more beautiful than they had imagined. Glittering chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting a soft, golden light. The walls were lined with shelves filled with sparkling ornaments, and in the center of the room stood a large spiral staircase made of ice, leading up to the higher levels of the castle.
This is incredible,
Sola whispered, her eyes wide.
Ellowyn couldn’t help but smile. This was only the beginning. Their adventure had just begun, and already the castle felt like it held more secrets than they could ever imagine.
Come on,
Tarin said, her voice filled with excitement. Let’s see what else this place has in store.
With that, the group set off deeper into the castle, ready to face whatever puzzles and mysteries lay ahead. The Christmas Castle was waiting—and so was its treasure.
