    CHAPTER ONE

    Amelia

The world raced around me while I sat on a chair waiting for Mrs. Hopps to give me the all clear. My heart raced in my ears, but I trained my face not to react no matter what she said.

You’ve been cleared by everyone. In twenty short days, you will be on Iyvis. Mrs. Hopps’s voice filtered into my mind as I sat in her office. A deep loathing for the woman sitting behind the desk pulsed through my body. After receiving a few extra vaccines, I was finally ready to board a ship to leave Earth. Do you remember the message for their leaders?

Yes, Ma’am. I wanted to yell, hell yes, I’m done, but I stayed composed. Mrs. Hopps didn’t like overly enthusiastic participants. Once I heard her call every woman leaving cattle, waiting for breeding. But I ignored it, no, I was getting my fresh start away from Earth and all the stupid people who lived here.

Go on, get out of here and spend your last night on this planet. Be here by nine a.m. or you will have wasted everyone’s time. Her brows rose, challenging me to miss it but there was no way in hell I would be a millisecond later. I reserved a room right next door with five alarms already programmed into my phone. I stood and strolled out of the office to see three other women waiting for final approval for tomorrow’s departure.

Miss Elizabeth Capelle, please come in, Mrs. Hopps called out and a young woman with blonde hair bolted up. I kept my pace out of the hallway and to the elevator. It zipped down with ease and my heart rate settled as I stepped into the parking garage. I strolled past the cars ready to spend the night watching as many episodes of my favorite shows as I could before I left. After all, I wouldn’t be able to see them when I arrived on Iyvis.

A low sigh left my lips and I turned left toward the hotel. I managed to stop just in time before running into a guy. Wait that couldn’t be...my heart leapt into my throat making it hard to breathe. I locked eyes with him, my ex and the very reason my parents stopped loving me even after five years of being separated.

Ah, I see you are looking well.

Yes, and soon I’ll be off this planet and away from you. I lifted my chin, I could never back down from him even in our six months of marriage.

So, you’re going to that filthy elf planet. Why would you even consider that? he spat, and his eyes widened.

Maybe it had everything to do with you and my parents. You’re the one who cheated, left my heart in pieces, then convinced my family that I was in the wrong! My voice rose as my anger spread through my chest.

You need to stay here so in a few years when I’m done fucking the town, I can settle for you. His lips lifted in a fucking grin. I couldn’t take it anymore. No, I clenched my fist tight and swung hard into his jaw. Pain bloomed in my knuckles, but the crunch of his nose made it all better.

Amelia! My mother’s voice filled my ears and I turned to see her natural disgusted appearance pointed right at me. Just freaking typical.

No, I’m not doing this right now. I shook my hand out and glared daggers at my ex. Stay away from me. You just have to do that for another day and then I’ll be gone.

You’re not leaving this planet, Mother hissed and inched closer and my ex gave her the room. I took a few steps back, putting more space between the woman who birthed me and my fucking asshat ex-boyfriend.

Tomorrow I will be on that damn shuttle and you’ll never see me again. I swallowed hard. I mean, that’s what you all want. I’m the fuck up of the family who can’t do anything correctly. Hot tears streamed down my face as I glared at both of them.

You can fix your mistakes here. Mom pointed at the hard ground under our feet. All the yelling earned us a few sideways glances and even a few glares by the passersby. Your father wants you home, for what, I don’t know. You were never wanted and I'm glad you’re going off to a new planet, she sneered.

Plus, they aren’t giving you enough for her. Didn’t you say it was only thirty grand? My ex arched his brow and glanced at my mother.

I’m done. You both can go fuck each other. We all know you want to screw everything that moves and you... I pointed at my mother. And you, well, you have many boy toys. Have fun! I stormed off and left them both stunned.

I hated them both and they could go to hell. My fresh start was tomorrow. I bounced into the lobby and turned to make sure neither of them followed me. I didn’t feel like yelling anymore.

When I entered my room, I locked the damn door and sighed with relief. After a quick scan of the place, I sat down on my bed
