Know Your Bible - David Dailey

The Books of the Old Testament

    Genesis

    Author: Moses

    Date Written: 1440-1400 BC

Nutshell: Genesis narrated the creation of our world to the entrance of sin in the Garden of Eden and the first murder when Cain killed his brother, Abel. This was followed by the flood that destroyed all of mankind, except for a man called Noah. Because of Noah’s obedience to God, it was given to his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, to repopulate the earth. Abraham came to the scene and in his old age, received the promised child, Isaac, whom he was asked to sacrifice on an altar to God. Just as Abraham raised his hand to kill his only son, an angel prevented him! Isaac was the father of twins, Esau and Jacob. Jacob’s name became Israel. Israel’s son, Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers, became the right-hand man of Pharaoh, in Egypt and rescued his family from famine to dwell in the land of Goshen.

Key people: God, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Shem, Ham, Japheth, Abraham, Isaac, Israel and his twelve sons

Key events: Creation, the fall, the flood, Isaac was born to Abraham in his old age, Jacob wrestled with an angel and received God’s blessing, Joseph was sold into slavery but became governor over Egypt, and the children of Israel came to dwell in Egypt

    Key Quotes:

Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 25:23, And the Lord said unto her, (Isaac’s wife, Rebekah) Two nations are in thy womb, and two manners of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people, and the elder shall serve the younger.

Genesis 41:41, And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.

Some Facts: The book of Genesis was 50 chapters long. It was believed that it was written by Moses as he directly heard it from God. If we had any doubts about the creation, we were reminded of how mightily God used Moses to perform many miracles and that Moses spoke to God face to face.

Obedience to God was stressed. God blessed Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph for obedience, but Adam and Eve, Cain, and Esau lost their blessings through disobedience.

Inspirational thought: According to the account of the flood, every nation today stemmed from Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

    Exodus

    Author: Moses

    Date Written: 1440-1400 BC

Nutshell: The children of Israel were increasing abundantly so that it was deemed a threat to the new king of Egypt. For this reason, he put them in bondage and even had their male newborns drowned. However, the baby, Moses was saved and adopted by the Pharaoh’s daughter who raised him in the palace. When Moses became a man, he fled to Midian because Pharaoh wanted to kill him for murdering an Egyptian. Here the angel of the Lord appeared in a burning bush and instructed him to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt. It took signs, miracles, plagues, and even the death of his firstborn before Pharaoh would let the Israelites go. God parted the Red Sea for them to cross over it and closed it upon the Egyptian soldiers who had pursued them. On Mount Sinai, Moses was given the Ten Commandments written with the finger of God. Instead of coming into the land he had promised them, God allowed the children of Israel to wander in the wilderness for forty years because of their disobedience and murmuring.

Key people:  Pharaoh, Moses, Aaron, I Am (God)

Key events and messages: Israelites were put into bondage, Moses was born and raised in the palace, God spoke to Moses from a burning bush, God performed miracles and plagues to set the Israelites free, God parts the Red Sea, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, God provides water, quails and heavenly manna, the glory of God fills the tent of the tabernacle.

    Key Quote: Exodus 14:13,14
