    Well Lived - Sally Clarkson

    ONE

    CURATING DELIGHT

    The LORD makes firm the steps

    of the one who delights in him;

    though he may stumble, he will not fall,

    for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

    PSALM 37:23-24 NIV

    Mama! You won’t believe this! I was granted a full scholarship to get my Master of Theology at Oxford. Would you consider visiting for a while? I’m going to need help when the baby comes so I can attend seminars each week."

    That phone call from my daughter was the start of an adventure that would lead to many others in the years to come. My husband, Clay, and I were delighted to journey across the pond, as they say, to be supportive of Sarah and her husband, Thomas. This was to be my first grandchild. We knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be present at the dawn of this sweet baby’s life.

    We began planning for our journey to Oxford immediately. Clay located a small, old house just down the street from Sarah’s flat, and I started the task of packing what we might need. I had been to the UK many times before, but now I could stay there for six months during her term and take in its treasures in a new way. So, as I packed, I dreamed of sipping tea in a lovely cottage with friends, being surrounded by fascinating historical architecture, having life-changing conversations with the intelligent students who attended Oxford to become world changers. I envisioned strolls through vibrant gardens in the sunshine with flowers abloom in every color. Maybe I would even sense the spirit of Jane Austen, hear the whispers of C.S. Lewis’s stories, live among Tolkienesque images, and dine at a table in the Great Hall in the Harry Potter movies, a real dining hall at Oxford’s Christ
