DEDICATION
Coffee and Dreams Volume 3
To Laurie and the trees, for inspiring so many stories with her fun and unique character. When the winds whisper through the branches, listen for our voices. We might have a new story to tell.

Doubly Blessed
For Elizabeth, of course.
This time I’d also like to thank J.J. Caler and Alinar Den for giving an unpublished author a shot in volume 2 of Coffee and Dreams, and enthusiastically supporting me.
Last but not least, thanks to my family. You know who you are.
Daniel Nick
Fortune in a Cup
To my fellow authors, always remember true inspiration comes from within. When you have trouble locating it, I will be there to help you find it. That is after all, the true magic of friendship.

Quint once told me I was a ‘plain clothes radical’. I liked the sound of that. It suited me, and he should know. He’s been my boss for twenty-six years.
By the way, I’m perfect for my job—the ideal invisible person. Meaning, female; short, mousy blonde hair fading to gray; early fifties and slightly overweight, not enough to hinder my performance, but enough you wouldn’t notice or suspect there might have been curves at one time. I can dress bland or bold, even look like a thrift store reject. If you passed me on the street, the only thing you would likely remember is seeing a non-descript middle-aged woman. Of course if you were my target, you wouldn’t remember anything. I’m very good at my job.
There’s a name for what I do. I’m a ‘Paymaster’. I’m the cold-blooded son-of-a-bitch who can slit your throat or thump a bullet so fast you’ll never see it coming because you would never have perceived me as being a threat. A total nobody, accidentally brushing up against you. Minutes later I will be strolling through the crowds like a chameleon.
Retirement will be good for me, I’m sure. I’ve managed my funds and assets well. Yes, it would be nice to think I could continue on until I’m old and truly gray but not very practical. I know I’m good at my job, I have to be. But there is no doubt my recent aches and pains will, in time, become a distraction and slow reflexes will always get you killed. When it’s time to let go, it’s time.
I recently asked Quint to let me choose my last assignment. This is not a common request and I was counting on our long association to favor me with an affirmative response. Emotional involvement has never been an acceptable facet of our work so I was pussyfooting around the fine print pretty good.
It isn’t that ‘settling’ this account will change my life or anything so remotely noble as that. A personal act of revenge is what it is, and it will feel so fucking good to pay this particular bastard his wages in full. Myself, just him and little old me. One on one. Then one on none.
Between assignments, life can sometimes become a bit boring. Our personal lives must always be low key and without patterns. Friends and pets are
