If you’re not a part of the solution, you’re a part of the problem.
—AFRICAN PROVERB
Unless someone is a medical professional, there are surprisingly few health books devoted to chronic disease management, and even fewer discussing how to use natural therapies. This remains a paradox to us because more than 60 percent of the American population (nearly 200 million people) are affected by at least one chronic illness, and more than 40 percent have two or more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Even more shocking, there were zero books devoted to the topic of using essential oils to prevent and/or treat chronic disease at the time we wrote this book. That’s right, you read it correctly. Zero.
There is obviously a gap here, and the book you now hold in your hands is our attempt at filling it.
OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU
Hi, my name is Dr. Eric Zielinski, and people online know me as Dr. Z.
With my wife, Sabrina (aka Mama Z
), at my side, we are thrilled to present to you our latest installment of books devoted to learning how to use essential oils to experience the abundant life.
Before we begin, I’d like to offer my sincere and humble recognition that cancer, depression, obesity, and the other chronic conditions mentioned in this book can be absolutely devastating. I am personally acquainted with several of them, having suffered not only from depression, panic attacks, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts in my late teens and early twenties but alcohol and substance abuse as well.
First and foremost, know that Mama Z and I are praying for you. In addition, there are thousands of people across the globe who have joined us through our private groups and fan pages in an effort to support those battling chronic disease.
Second, there’s hope. I am living proof that someone can overcome debilitating chronic disease, including mental health issues! I credit my healing experience to my faith in Christ, because it wasn’t until I became a Christian that I was able to get sober and experience the fullness of joy and happiness. Today, eighteen years later, I can confidently boast in the Lord that I am still free! Sabrina has her own healing story of how God delivered her from an eating disorder and freed her from ten prescription drugs in her mid-twenties. So trust me when I say that we truly empathize with people who suffer from chronic health issues.
Third, Mama Z and I wholeheartedly believe that it is our God-given right to enjoy the abundant life that Christ refers to in John 10:10—the fullest expression of health in all areas of your life: spiritual, physical, emotional, financial, occupational, social, and, of course, mental. However, Christ’s promise of the abundant life is like a winning lottery ticket, and many people neglect to cash it in. We invite you to join us to claim this right, and enjoy a glorious mental health in all of its joyful abundance!
Fourth, speaking of joy, the Bible tells us The joy of the Lord is your strength
(Nehemiah 8:10).
At the core of our very existence is how we feel, and these feelings are intricately tied into our day-to-day existence and how well we adapt to the never-ending stressors of life. To be unhealthy or unwell emotionally, mentally, or physically is to be vulnerable at the deepest level of your humanity. This puts you at risk of developing further problems with your health, finances, and relationships, on your job, and in your spiritual life. Remember, you’re only as strong as your weakest link, and all areas of your life are interconnected. To be strong,
on the other hand, is necessitated by joy, as described by Nehemiah, which is arguably the most powerful, invigorating feeling one can have. Joy will fuel and empower you through all obstacles, and it’s vital to overcome chronic disease.
Last, but certainly not least, it’s okay (and oftentimes necessary) to get help. If you suffer from chronic disease of any sort, we highly encourage you to seek support from a qualified professional if it’s impacting your mental well-being. We have found that, as well intentioned as our loved ones may be, they are oftentimes unable to help us through those rough times, and having someone stable in your life to act as an anchor can make all the difference in the world.
We love you, are rooting for you, and hope this book provides the answers that you’re looking for!
—Dr. Z
Introduction
When the solution is simple, God is answering.
—ALBERT EINSTEIN
On April 15, 2020, when most of America and the world were under shelter-in-place orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Roger Seheult, MD, posted his Coronavirus Pandemic Update 56: What Is ‘Forest Bathing’ & Can It Boost Immunity Against Viruses?
on YouTube.
It was a fascinating presentation that introduced the concept of forest bathing
(the ancient Japanese practice of simply being in nature
) to people in Western civilization. Shinrin-yoku (shinrin meaning forest
and yoku meaning bath
in Japanese) refers to immersing yourself in the forest atmosphere and enjoying nature.
Not to be confused with hiking or any sort of exercise, the key to shinrin-yoku is to connect with nature through your five senses. Considered a bridge between the human experience and the natural world, forest bathing exposes us to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are being released into the air by the surrounding trees and plants. VOCs, of course, are the active chemical components emitted by plants and flowers that give them their distinct aroma. They are also more commonly referred to as essential oils.
As shown in multiple clinical trials, the naturally occurring VOCs in nature have a profound, measurable effect on enhancing immune function by increasing the quantity and activity of natural killer cells (NK cells), among other health benefits. As white blood cells that support immune function, NK cells are a component of the first line of defense against tumors, inflammation, and viral infections. Essentially, being out in nature is synonymous to wearing a personal aromatherapy inhaler or diffuser necklace. This was Dr. Seheult’s point: if people really wanted to boost their immune function, they’d get outdoors and forest bathe!
As you may have guessed, when they evaluated how study participants fared indoors with aromatherapy diffusers running, they found an effect similar to being out in nature!
We can then, quite literally, bring the outside in with essential oils and obtain the same beneficial constituents that trees and plants release during forest bathing. And in doing so, we reap their powerful benefits: uplifting our mood, calming the nervous system, treating illnesses, and strengthening the immune system.
ESSENTIAL OILS IN HEALTH AND HEALING
Essential oils have been used since ancient times as natural remedies to enhance health and well-being. In recent years, an increased emphasis on holistic healing has led to a resurgence in the traditional use of essential oils for restoring health, treating diseases and their symptoms, and protecting us against illness.
The practice of using essential oils has now established itself as a viable health-care alternative (and complement) to conventional medicine. In fact, a recent study of integrative medicine practitioners uncovered that 96.8 percent of clinicians surveyed recommend using essential oils to their patients.
Since the mid-1990s, thousands of research studies have been conducted, and science has finally caught up with what our ancestors knew all along: the plant-based volatile organic compounds that compose our favorite essential oils contain wonderful medicinal properties and can help keep our families free of sickness and disease.
This resurgence has not come too soon! Consider that by 2050, 66 percent of the world’s population is projected to be urban, and the recent coronavirus outbreak has given us a glimpse of the health concerns humanity must consider as it continues to separate itself from nature.
COVID-19 is a good example. The sharp rise in active cases during the summer of 2020 should be seen as a wake-up call to view this crisis as an opportunity to build a healthier and more disease-resilient society.
While infectious diseases like COVID-19 haunt us, this does not diminish the concern over chronic diseases, which are still the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. We’re talking about heart disease, cancer, respiratory illnesses, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and dementias, and mental health disorders, among many others. Disease rates from these conditions are accelerating globally, advancing across every region, and pervading all socioeconomic classes. By 2020, cases of chronic disease had already risen by 57 percent, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and conditions like obesity were quickly discovered to be primary risk factors associated with mortality rate in COVID-19 patients!
What has been driving this surge? Medical experts cite the following reasons: accelerated urbanization, a more sedentary lifestyle, rising rates of weight gain and abdominal fat, unhealthy Westernized diets and poor nutrition, tobacco, excessive alcohol use, and drug abuse.
Look over that list again. Each one of the factors is controllable, meaning when you modify your lifestyle for the better, you knock out one or more factors that can lead to chronic disease, prevent it, and enhance your well-being.
The WHO concurs: Chronic disease prevention and control helps people to live longer and healthier lives.
Who doesn’t want to live a longer, healthier life! The Essential Oils Apothecary can help you do just that.
A MODERN APOTHECARY
In the nineteenth century, if you had a nasty cough, upset tummy, or other ailment, your mother would go to an apothecary, who would mix up an herbal concoction of some sort, maybe even some essential oils, and wait for it to work its magic.
An apothecary is (and was) a medical professional who prepares and sells medicines, usually of an herbal variety, as well as a healer who understands the power of nature to prevent and treat ailments. Benjamin Franklin was an apothecary, among his many other pursuits.
Apothecary, as a profession, goes back to around 2600 BC, when the ancient Babylonians were credited with the earliest records of the practice. Clay tablets from that period have been found with medical texts recording symptoms, the prescriptions, and the directions for mixing remedies.
Apothecaries were renowned for their investigations into herbal and chemical ingredients—a field of study that was a precursor to the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology. The modern equivalent of an apothecary is a pharmacist—a credentialed health-care professional who takes orders for medications and fills prescriptions.
At a time when the pharmaceutical industry has seemingly invented a drug for every ache and ailment, the idea of an apothecary seems almost quaint. But it is not! Nowhere is the craft of the apothecary more alive and relevant than in the practice of essential oils, especially the art of blending to create uplifting, pleasant, and therapeutic scents.
When you blend oils, all sorts of wonderful things can happen. Creating what’s referred to as a synergistic effect,
various essential oils complement each other and bring out healing properties that you would not otherwise have experienced if you used only a single oil.
Essential oils generally work better when mixed with other essential oils. This quality is so unlike pharmaceutical drugs, which are made from isolated constituents that have a long list of adverse side effects.
There is also a system to blending—one that has its roots in the early work of apothecaries. Oils are blended either by fragrance families, such as floral oils, citrus oils, woody oils, or medicinal oils. Medicinal oils are usually combined according to their group—energizing, calming, detoxifying, or healing.
This book will introduce you to many essential oils and combinations of oils, help you gain confidence in blending, and discover scent combinations you like. Before long, you’ll develop an instinct for creating your own essential oil solutions. Along the way, you will find it fun to channel your own inner apothecary!
BRING YOURSELF BACK TO BALANCE WITH THE ESSENTIAL OILS APOTHECARY
If you or a loved one has had to deal with a physical chronic illness, you know the battle and the frustration. You have lived it. Chronic disease can also lead to emotional ailments, such as fear, sadness, depression, and stress. This makes life difficult for those who struggle daily. There are no vaccines that can prevent chronic illness, and there are no medications to cure them. Drugs can only alleviate the symptoms, and some don’t even work that well. For this reason, many people turn to alternative therapies and treatments that can provide relief—including essential oils.
The purpose of this book is to push the boundaries of what essential oils can do, not only for your health but for society as a whole. In it, you will
learn how to treat and prevent the leading forms of chronic disease with essential oils, based on scientific evidence from leading journals.
adopt lifestyle actions that support the power of essential oils against chronic illness.
acquire an accessible and comprehensive introduction to essential oils therapy.
gain a truly holistic approach so that you can use essential oils to not only treat ailments but also boost your immunity against them.
discover how to safely create your own remedies using essential oils you know and love and boost your energy, relieve stress and depression, enhance your focus, regain your well-being, and live a more natural lifestyle.
experience the power of essential oils and aromatherapy to build a lifetime of wonderful health habits.
This book features profiles of hundreds of the most important essential oils, with information on their medicinal uses and recipes for common concerns. We have developed a huge array of healing recipes that will help you treat many complaints, from the mild to the serious. We use these essential oil remedies with ourselves and with our family, friends, clients, and colleagues. Obviously, we would not do this unless we had a high degree of confidence in the healing power of essential oils and their safety. Throughout this book, you’ll find the essential oils and blends we know to be the most effective for leading diseases and health problems. Our information is based on our personal experience, as well as the ever-expanding database of scientific information about the VOCs found in plants.
This book comes not only from a lifetime of experience but from our hearts as we seek to do whatever we can to help people heal naturally.

Chapter 1
A Closer Look at Chronic Disease
Behind every chronic illness is just a person trying to find their way in the world.
—GLENN SCHWEITZER
If you think about it, up until COVID-19 turned our lives upside-down, twenty-first-century life was pretty nice for most of us. We live longer than our recent ancestors. We’re fairly active, even in our golden years. Our kids have been surviving their childhood and teenage years at an unprecedented rate. Cigarette smoking has reached an all-time low among adults in the United States.
But are we healthier? Do we live better? What about you: do you enjoy great health and a fulfilled life?
Modern medicine has been able to keep people alive, sure, but what kind of life is it? Obesity is at an all-time high, and diabetes keeps climbing higher up the list. Heart disease is still the number one killer of men and women. The growing suicide rate points to a serious lack of mental health care.
While modern medicine has been able to greatly reduce infectious diseases (though new strains like COVID-19 have exposed some serious holes in that arena), it is very ineffective at preventing or reducing chronic diseases.
So when we say chronic disease,
exactly what are we talking about?
It may come as a surprise, but despite all of our medical advances and our focus on unifying governing health agencies across the globe, there is no consensus as to what defines a chronic illness.
For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies seven health conditions as chronic disease: heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.
In contrast, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have a more extensive list of twenty-one chronic conditions, adding alcohol abuse, depression, and HIV/AIDS, but leaving out obesity.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also has a more extensive list and includes various mental disorders, vision and hearing impairments, oral diseases, bone and joint disorders, and genetic disorders.
And Medline, the US National Library of Medicine premier bibliographic database, branches out to include neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and epilepsy.
Not only is the list of chronic illnesses debated, but so are the qualifying definitions. The CDC defines a chronic disease as conditions that last one year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both.
Whereas Medline takes a more nebulous approach: a long-term health condition that may not have a cure.
To make matters even more complicated, chronic diseases appear under different headings. Sometimes the term noncommunicable diseases distinguishes itself from communicable,
or infectious, diseases. Yet several chronic diseases have an infectious component, such as cervical cancer and liver cancer. Lifestyle-related disease is a term that emphasizes the contribution of diet, exercise, and other behaviors to the development of chronic diseases. Yet many chronic diseases are heavily triggered by environmental circumstances, which are not the result of our individual choices.
Why is all of this important?
For one thing, it is confusing to the public. Not having a clearly defined understanding of what chronic disease is and isn’t has led to widespread misunderstandings.
In fact, according to the WHO, there are several half-truths and common misunderstandings people across the globe share about chronic disease. Here’s a brief summary:
My grandfather smoked and was overweight—and he lived to ninety-six.
(Yes, this happens, but it is rare and not worth the risk of doing things you know are unhealthy.)
Chronic disease affects rich people and wealthy countries. (On the contrary, the less affluent someone is, the more likely they are to develop a life-threatening chronic condition.)
Mostly older people are affected. (Actually, nearly 50 percent of chronic disease deaths occur in people under seventy years of age.)
Usually men are affected—think heart disease. (Not true. Men and women are equally at risk.)
Being healthy and preventing chronic disease is too expensive.
(Again, not true, and we’ll outline many budget-friendly options in this book.)
We will all die one day, and getting a chronic disease is inevitable.
This last point is key. Nothing could be further from the truth, and this underlying suspicion that nothing can be done to prevent and successfully treat chronic disease is completely false.
For the sake of this book, we lean toward a WHO broad-stroke approach to defining chronic disease, its symptoms, and its management. Chronic disease:
has its origins at young ages;
takes decades to become fully established as epidemics;
requires a long-term and systematic approach to treatment;
and, most important, has many opportunities for prevention—even reversal.
RISK FACTORS FOR CHRONIC DISEASES
All of the leading chronic diseases—arthritis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic fatigue, COPD, fatty liver, obesity, osteoporosis, sleep disorders, and type 2 diabetes—are linked by common and preventable risk factors, according to the CDC and other global health authorities, including the following:
Tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke
Inadequate, unbalanced nutrition, including diets low in fruits and vegetables and high in sugar, sodium, and processed foods
Sedentary lifestyle
Alcohol abuse
There are other risk factors for most chronic diseases, as well, that have emerged from major landmark studies.
Chronic Inflammation
This occurs if the body’s normal inflammatory healing process does not end when it should, leaving your body in an unhealthy state of alarm that can hurt your physical and mental well-being. Over time, chronic inflammation may impair the function of your tissues and organs—a destructive condition that leads to many chronic diseases.
Toxic Burden
Indoor air pollution, fluoridated water, contaminants, pesticides, chemical cleaners, drugs, and other environmental exposures can accumulate in your tissues and cause disease.
Genotoxins
These are chemicals or agents, usually found in the environment, that can cause damage to genetic material and are also involved in many chronic diseases, such as liver disease, brain illnesses, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, chronic inflammation, and aging.
Over-Sanitization
People who live in areas with high levels of sanitation do not obtain the normal exposure to microbes, pollen, and other microscopic elements in the environment. The lack of that exposure negatively affects the development of the immune system, making people more susceptible to emerging viruses and even Alzheimer’s disease.
Stress
It’s widely known that stress damages health in many ways. It interferes with sleep, leads to a weakened immune system, causes digestive problems and obesity, and increases your risk of depression.
EMF Exposure
Cell phones, microwaves, Wi-Fi routers, and other devices are all forms of electromagnetic frequency (EMF) exposure, which emits radiation that can damage the immune system. Overexposure to even low levels of radiation from these sources has been known to trigger sleep disorders, headaches, fatigue, memory problems, cognitive problems, and many other health problems.
Comorbidities
This refers to other chronic diseases that make you more susceptible to additional chronic diseases. Remember that kids’ song explaining how the bones in the body connect? We can still hear it in our heads—The foot bone connects to the ankle bone….
Well, the same goes for chronic disease. For
