Bet on Boldness
In November 2012, venture capitalists Sachin Deshpande, Patrick Eggen, and Nagraj Kashyap considered investing $500,000 in Saasbee, a startup aiming to revolutionize videoconferencing. Introduced by Silicon Valley angel investor Bill Tai, Kashyap met Saasbee’s founder, Eric Yuan, who previously worked at WebEx. There was tough competition from WebEx, Skype, Google Hangouts, and others, but Yuan claimed his product was superior.
Deshpande, impressed by Yuan’s knowledge and the product’s performance, invested $5 million. Eggen, also impressed, saw Yuan as a technical virtuoso with sales skills.
