Ananse's Wife
()
About this ebook
Ananse's Wife is a pre-colonial Ghanaian novel that tackles the destructive power of greed, the consequences of envy and the complexities of human relationships. The narrative weaves together themes of fate and feud, serving as a poignant reminder that while disappointment and betrayal are inevitable in life, it is how we respond to these trials that shape our destiny.
The story centers on Ananga, a courageous woman celebrated for her bravery in defending her village against an invasion. Her return is marked by festivities, with gifts from both the villagers and their colonial benefactors. While her husband, Ananse, is delighted that her arrival is accompanied by liquor, it also sparks discontent among the villagers, particularly Baba, Ananse's old friend.
Baba, harboring grievances against Ananse for his perceived greed and betrayal, devises a plan to exact revenge but the unimaginable and unexplainable happens. Delve into the pages to find out…

CHAPTER ONE: THE AGENDA BROTHERS
Ananse is a popular traditional character in Ghanaian literature, usually portrayed as a mischievous figure of wisdom. There is the association of this character to a spider, because they share the canniness of engineering traps or webs to catch their prey.
Despite Ananse's subtlety, he was never selfish to his family because they played a role in the success of his tricks. If there was anyone Ananse feared, it was his wife. They say, ‘a person who cooks for you has your life in their palms.’ Ananse's house was closest to the big Baobab tree where the finest Pito (red beer) was sold but he wouldn't dare set foot in that territory. His wife had placed a ban on visiting the shade of the baobab tree, which diminished his will to sit, drink and argue his way into free cups of Pito (red beer). It was not just about his appetite for Pito (red beer), but the depth of gossip he traded while under its influence. He once shared a joke that his wife was unable to cook anything delicious and that he, Ananse, did all the cooking for their large family.
My wife's food can kill a child. She cooks everything with loads of pepper, as if she is taking revenge on me for not paying her bride price in full.
They all laughed.
Maybe she adds lots of pepper to your food because you lie too much Ananse,
the Pito (red beer) brewer jovially defended her friend. How can you say Ananga,
