My Education & My ADHD - Janna Willard

    Introduction

In 2012, I joined Tumblr . After a few months, I realized that there was a lot of misinformation about ADHD going around on the platform. From the idea that the type of ADHD affecting the type of medication that will help to stereotypes about what ADHD even is, it was obvious that people had been misinformed. So I started Actually ADHD in an attempt to help disseminate accurate information. Once people started writing in with their questions, it quickly became an advice blog.

In the decade since I started the Tumblr, I (and my sometime co-mods) have helped a lot of people understand themselves and their ADHD better. I’m not sure of the exact amount because the number of followers the Tumblr has isn’t an accurate indication of how many people have been helped. And looking at how many asks have been replied to doesn’t work either, since some people have written in more than once and there’s an Anon option.

So, here’s what you need to know about me:

    I’m an Old (GenX).

I was diagnosed at the age of 28, in 2005.

I spent about ten years working in early intervention, primarily with autistic children.

Hyperfocusing on reading is my super power—by which I mean that if there are words in front of my face, I will not hear anything anyone says to me and will likely forget that my body needs things like food and the bathroom.

Because of this, I read everything I could about ADHD just before and after my diagnosis, and I continue to read up on it when I can
