School: He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

    Intro

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey—a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 134 mph—was barreling toward the Texas coastline. The storm hit Houston after dark, at 10 p.m. central time. Property damage along the coastline of Texas and parts of Louisiana was extensive. Some cost estimates ranged as high as $125 billion, with all damage and recovery efforts included. There was one silver lining for the city of Houston, however; there was minimal human injury and loss of life. This good news can be attributed to the leadership of the city by heeding the National Weather Service warning prior to Harvey’s arrival. City officials, along with the residents, took all the necessary precautions to prepare themselves for a horrible night. While they had to weather the storm, they were able to minimize its impact. They were a good example of how we must heed warnings. Warnings play a vital role in guiding leaders.

Unlike the leaders of Houston, the leaders of Israel failed to heed the warnings given by the prophet Ezekiel and the prophet Jeremiah. Israel was sternly warned by God that their behavior and their worship of false gods angered God. Their failure to heed God’s warning led to the eventual fall of Jerusalem to Babylon in 586 BC.

    Think About It

How does moving from despair to hope reflect the human experience in times of suffering?
