After feeling increasingly isolated socially at her San Francisco high school, Olivia is hopeful when her Grandma Helen sends her to the small, quirky Michigan town where Helen grew up to stay with relatives Olivia never knew she had.
Though the initial summer trip is only supposed to last two months, Olivia unexpectedly connects with her cousins and begins to build the sense of home and family she's always longed for. She continues to grapple with the choice between staying or returning to San Francisco before the school year begins.
Chapter 1
Where Olivia feels isolated and gets in trouble at her San Francisco high school:
Olivia kept her eyes down as she hurried through the crowded high school hallway, clutching her books tightly. The first week as a junior and she still felt like an outsider.
A loud burst of laughter made her look up. Heather and her friends were smiling and chatting nearby. Olivia felt a pang of loneliness stab through her.
Hey, weird girl! Love your bag, so retro,
Heather's friend Tina smirked as she shoved past Olivia.
Heat flooded Olivia's cheeks. She had found the embroidered messenger bag at a thrift store. She used to think it was unique and cool. Doubts started flooding in as she ducked into her next class.
Later, Olivia sat beneath a large oak tree at lunch, picking at her food while reading her latest library book. A group of guys from the basketball team ran by,
