The Walled Garden
Long ago, our world shimmered with magic. Humans and magical creatures lived together in peace. At first, magic was everywhere. But as time passed, it began to fade away. It happened so slowly that hardly anyone noticed.
First, the dragons vanished into the clouds, never to be seen again. After them, the mermaids disappeared beneath the waves. Even the fairies, dancing in the moonlight, grew silent. Humans, too, felt their magic slip away until there was nothing left. They became just like you and me, with no magic at all.
But there was one who remembered the days of magic: Grandma Mary. When she was a little girl, magic still flickered softly in the world. She remembered laughing with fairies in the sunny fields, even though everyone said they were tricksy. And on one special night, she saw a dragon. It was a rare sight, for dragons were almost gone. She watched it fly across the moon, its scales glittering. She believed it was the last dragon saying goodbye.
Grandma Mary loved to share these tales with her granddaughter, Jenny. Jenny would sit close, her eyes sparkling with wonder. She imagined a world filled with magic, so different from the dull, gray one she knew.
Wouldn't it be better,
she often thought, if magic were still real?
One day, Jenny asked,
Grandma, will magic ever come back?
Grandma Mary smiled, a twinkle in her eye.
Magic,
she said softly, never truly leaves our world. It's hidden, waiting for those who believe to find it.
Jenny's heart leaped.
But where?
she asked, looking around as if expecting magic to appear right then.
Grandma Mary leaned in, whispering,
That, my dear, is the greatest mystery of all. Magic is there, somewhere, waiting just for you.
That night, as Jenny lay in bed, she dreamed of finding that hidden magic. She imagined a world alive with enchantment, a world just waiting for her to discover it.
The next day, Jenny asked her grandmother for more stories.
Of course, my dear,
said Grandma Mary, let me tell you the story of how I met the fairies.
Jenny didn’t get to hear the story because her father interrupted them.
Grandma Mary, please stop filling Jenny's head with these silly stories,
he said, shaking his head. He looked at Jenny. You should be focusing on your homework, not daydreaming about magic.
But Dad, it's summer vacation!
Jenny protested. I've read all my school books already. I want to enjoy the rest of my break.
Her father wasn't convinced. He dropped a fresh pile of books on the table.
Education never takes a vacation,
he said firmly, leaving the room.
Jenny sighed and slumped into her chair, picking up a book from the pile. It was so dull that she couldn't help but let her thoughts wander away from its pages. That's when Grandma Mary slipped another book onto the pile, giving Jenny a mysterious smile before leaving the room.
Jenny reached for Grandma Mary's book. It felt old, its cover worn over time. Opening it, she found a map nestled between its pages. The map was very old. Its edges were frayed, but it was beautifully drawn. To her surprise, she saw her house on the map and the woods that surrounded it. And then she saw the stream that ran nearby. But what caught her eye was something unexpected – a part of the map labeled The Walled Garden.
Jenny blinked in confusion. A walled garden? In their woods? She had roamed those woods many times and had never seen anything that looked like a garden, let alone one surrounded by walls.
She glanced towards her father, who was now buried in his work. With a spark of adventure lighting her eyes, Jenny tucked the map into a small bag and tiptoed out of the house. She felt her heart dance with
