    Our Faith Can Heal Others

    Luke 5:17–26

    Background Scriptures: Luke 5:17–26

ONE day while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem were sitting nearby, and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.

18 Just then some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus,

19 but, finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down on the stretcher through the tiles into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus.

20 When he saw their faith, he said, Friend, your sins are forgiven you.

21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?

22 When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, "Why do you raise such questions in your hearts?

23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’?

24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins—he said to the one who was paralyzed—I say to you, stand up and take your stretcher and go to your home." ‘

25 Immediately he stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God.

26 Amazement seized all of them, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen incredible things today.

    Introduction

Have you ever gone through a difficult time of hardship? How did the presence of a support system help you during your situation? When we enter into a community, it’s tempting to fall into line with a group that is popular or strive to be a person who is well–known and liked by everyone. However, it is the quality, not the quantity, of friends that truly matters. Today’s lesson from the Book of Luke centers on an incredible example of the spirit of true friendship and how true friends lend strength, support, and love when someone they care about is in crisis. Jesus celebrates the faith and tenacity of four friends who did whatever they could to help their friend find healing in Christ and wholeness in life.

    Four Friends Find a Way

Today’s lesson scripture begins with Jesus in a house teaching. Surrounding Him were Pharisees and numerous teachers of the Law. These well-read, knowledgeable people were some of the most influential leaders within the synagogues and community at this time. Christ’s teaching drew in people from far and wide places, as some people traveled from villages in Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem to hear His words. At this time, word traveled around about Jesus and His followers and message, which piqued the interest of the religious leaders in the community. But this wasn’t because they were eager to learn from Him, instead, they watched Jesus closely to find fault with what He said in order to condemn Him. On numerous occasions, Jesus openly debated and challenged the hypocritical behaviors of the Pharisees and teachers of the Law, resulting in their contempt of Him.

Word began to spread about Jesus’ ability to heal the sick and a large crowd gathered to listen to Him teach. As Jesus spoke to the crowd, four men came to the house while carrying their paralyzed friend on a mat. These four men wanted to bring their paralyzed friend to the house where Jesus was because they heard about His healing ministry. They believed Jesus could heal their friend, but found trouble when they arrived at the house. Because of the sheer number of people present, the friends couldn’t enter the house, but this didn’t stop them from finding a way to get their friend in front of Jesus. The paralyzed man’s friends went to the roof of the house and removed a part of the structure. During this time period in first-century Palestine, house roofs were flat and typically made from clay mixed with straw. These roofs were supported by beams and tree branches, similar to adobe homes. Tiles were more commonly used on the houses of more wealthy
