      CHAPTER - 1

      Dad, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple will it ever become one of the wonders of this world? asked a dejected Raju.

      Well, it is already the 26th wonder of this world said Shankaran, Raju’s father.

      This year shall we go to Madurai? asked Radhika, Raju’s younger sister.

      C’mon, Madurai again! Let us go somewhere else! Raju pleaded.

      Don’t bad mouth my birth place Raju. According to legend Madurai came into existence some 6000 years before Christ. Lord Shiva dropped a small drop of Amrutham from his mouth and Madurai came into existence. Goddess Meenakshi, an incarnation of Sakthi was not only born here, she was the queen and ran her regime in Madurai Vimala spoke proudly.

      What is Amrutham, Ma? asked Radhika, with her eyes shining like saucers as she always loved to hear stories from her mother.

      That is the eternal elixir of life Raju was non-chalant in his reply.

      Wow, how did you know? Shankaran asked with great curiosity.

      He is an avid reader. He must have read this book from Mom’s bookshelf Radhika stated.

      O.K. Ms. know all! Tell me about the background of Madurai and Tamil Sangam Raju teased Radhika.

      Well, Well, … Madurai … as Radhika was stuck for words, Vimala came to her rescue. Ancient Tamil Literature is called Sangam Literature. Madurai is the birth place of Sangam Literature. In those days Tamil Poets after writing a concept of literature will throw it in the ‘Potramarai Tank’ the temple tank of Madurai. If the written literature has a value then it would come up on the lake. If not it will drown, Vimala sighed with a faraway look in her eyes.

      Not only that Mom, the literature will be brought up on a golden lotus. That is why the Tank is named as ‘Potramarai Kulam’ said Raju.

      Wonderful, my boy! Vimala hugged her son proudly.

      Oh, he reads books all the time. He is a book worm. So, whatever he says it is out of a book Radhika blurted out with a tinge of jealousy.

      There was no stopping of Raju who continued, Pandian Dynasty ruled till 14th B.C. Madurai has faced many wars and had been very famous. King Thirumalai Naicker built the Meenakshi Amman Temple in 1623-1660 B.C. Madurai city grew along with the temple. Chithirai Festival held in the month of Chithirai somewhat in April is world famous festival even today.

      Radhika interrupted and said, Dad, let us decide where we want to go later but very soon there is going to be a book exhibition at Chennai and smiled slyly at Raju.

      Raju jumped up and said, Wow! Dad, I want to go there and buy books. Especially books on Egypt.

      Oh sure! You are not only a book worm, you are Egypt Crazy too Radhika said with a laugh.

      We have two book shelves full of book. I have a tough time in cleaning the shelves. Do we really need more books? Vimala grumbled.

      C’mon Vimala, books are the greatest asset and gift. Hereafter Raju, Radhika and myself will take turn to clean the shelves. O.K. children, we are leaving on Friday to Chennai and on Monday morning, we will be back to Madurai to celebrate Pongal Shankaran gave his decision.

      Shouldn’t we discuss a budget of the expenses for the books Vimala reminded the family gently.

      CHAPTER – 2

      As they reached Chennai their aunt Janaki and her daughter Akila welcomed them at the station. Akila jumped with joy when she came to know that the purpose of visit was to buy books at the ‘Chennai Book Fair’.

      Wow! How many book shops, thousands and thousands of books! It is so hard to decide what to buy and what to just glance at! Raju was excited.

      Left to myself, I will stay the whole 15 days and read and read and read…. Akila had a large appetite for reading.

      You two book worms, buy as many books as you want. Me, I am going towards the food stall teased Radhika.

      C’mon Rads, can’t you order your stomach to stop grumbling for a few hours. I cannot allow you to go to the canteen sector alone. Dad and Mom have given strict orders that we should not separate Raju was a strict follower of the rules laid by the parents.
