THE WONDERS OF SPACE
The Sun is so big that you could fit more than a million Earths inside it!
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun but it doesn't have an atmosphere to trap heat thereby making it super hot during the day and freezing at night.
Venus spins in the opposite direction to most planets causing the Sun to rise in the west and set in the east. Earth is the only planet known to have life and it's just the right distance from the Sun which is neither too hot nor too cold.
Mars is often called the Red Planet
because of its rusty color caused by iron oxide or rust on its surface.
Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and it has a massive storm called the Great Red Spot that's been raging for centuries.
Saturn's beautiful rings are made up of ice particles and some of them are as small as grains of sand.
Uranus is a unique planet because it rotates on its side rolling along almost like a barrel as it orbits the Sun.
Neptune has the fastest winds in the solar system reaching speeds of over 1,200 miles per hour!
Pluto used to be considered the ninth planet but it was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006.
The Moon is not a planet; It's Earth's natural satellite and it's the only place beyond Earth where humans have walked.
Hubble Space Telescope has captured amazing pictures of distant galaxies which helps scientists learn more about the universe.
Stars twinkle because Earth's atmosphere bends the light they emit creating the illusion of twinkling.
North Star or Polaris is a special star that stays almost stationary in the sky and has helped sailors navigate for centuries.
A light-year is a unit of distance and it's the distance that light travels in one year. It's about 5.88 trillion miles!
The Milky Way is our home galaxy and it contains billions of stars including our Sun.
Galaxies come in different shapes including spirals, ellipses and irregular shapes.
Andromeda Galaxy is on a collision course with the Milky Way but don't worry it won't happen for billions of years.
Black holes are mysterious objects in space with gravity so strong that nothing not even light can escape them.
A shooting star is not a star at all but a tiny meteoroid burning up as it enters Earth's atmosphere.
Comets are like icy, dirty snowballs that orbit the Sun and their tails always point away from the Sun.
The Big Dipper is not a constellation but part of Ursa Major the Great Bear and it's visible in the northern sky.
The Kuiper Belt is a region in the outer solar system where many comets come from.
Astronauts float in space because there is no gravity to pull them down.
International Space Station (ISS) is like a space home where astronauts live and work.
Space is not completely empty. It contains tiny particles called space dust.
The first living being in space was a dog named Laika who orbited Earth in 1957.
The largest volcano in our solar system is on Mars and is called Olympus Mons.
A day on Venus is longer than a year. It takes about 243 Earth days for Venus to complete one rotation.
Great Barrier Reef on Earth is so large that it can be seen from space.
Biggest canyon in our solar system is Valles Mariners on Mars - it's much larger than the Grand Canyon on Earth. Closest galaxy to us is the Andromeda Galaxy which is about 2.5 million light-years away.
Some stars are so small and faint that they are called brown dwarfs instead of stars.
Sun is a giant ball of hot glowing gas mostly made up of hydrogen and helium.
The word astronaut
means star sailor
in Greek.
The largest volcano on Earth is Mauna Loa in Hawaii and it's underwater volcano

Ganymede is one of Jupiter's moons is the largest moon in our solar system.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the next-generation space telescope set to explore the universe in more detail. Solar system is about 4.6 billion years old and the Sun makes up about 99.86% of its total mass.
The atmosphere of Uranus smells like rotten eggs due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas.
The tallest mountain in our solar system is on Mars called Olympus Mons which is about 13.6 miles (22 km) high.
Neptune's blue color comes from the presence of methane in its atmosphere.
The spacecraft Voyager 1 has travelled farther from Earth than any other human made object.
