TOEFL iBT Reading Practice - Jackie Bolen
About the Author: Jackie Bolen
I taught English in South Korea for 10 years to every level and type of student. I've taught every age from kindergarten kids to adults. Most of my time has centered around teaching at two universities in Cheonan and Busan. These days, I'm teaching teenagers and adults in Vancouver, Canada. In my spare time, you can usually find me outside surfing, biking, hiking, or snowshoeing.
In case you were wondering what my academic qualifications are, I hold a Master of Arts in Psychology. During my time in Korea I successfully completed both the Cambridge CELTA and DELTA certification programs. With the combination of almost 15 years teaching ESL/EFL learners of all ages and levels, and the more formal teaching qualifications I've obtained, I have a solid foundation on which to offer advice to English learners.

Tips for the TOEFL Reading Exam
Mastering the TOEFL reading section is crucial for success in the overall exam, as it assesses your ability to understand and analyze written texts in English. Here are the top tips to excel in the TOEFL reading exam:
Practice Regularly
Consistent practice is key. Familiarize yourself with various types of reading passages to enhance your comprehension skills and speed.
Build Your Vocabulary
Strengthen your vocabulary by reading a variety of English texts. This will help you understand the context and meaning of words used in TOEFL reading passages.
Underline Key Information
While reading the passages, underline or take notes on key information, main ideas, and supporting details. This will aid in quickly locating relevant information.
Skim and Scan Efficiently
Develop efficient skimming and scanning techniques to quickly identify the main idea, headings, and specific details. This skill is crucial for managing your time effectively.
Pay Attention to Transition Words
Transition words such as however,
moreover,
and nevertheless
provide important clues about the relationships between ideas in the passage. Recognizing these connections enhances your understanding.
Practice Time Management
Each reading section has a time limit. Practice managing your time effectively during practice sessions to ensure you can complete each passage and associated questions within the allocated time.
Read Actively
Engage actively with the passage. Think critically about the author's purpose, tone, and argument. This approach will prepare you for questions that assess your understanding of the author's viewpoint.
Predict Answers Before Reviewing Choices
Formulate your answer before looking at the choices provided. It will help you avoid the tempting, but incorrect options and allows you to focus on the most accurate choice.
Be Mindful of Synonyms
TOEFL questions often use synonyms for words in the passage. Be attentive to these variations, and don't get thrown off by slight changes in wording.
Review and Learn from Mistakes
After completing practice exams or exercises, thoroughly review your mistakes. Understand why you selected incorrect answers and learn from them to avoid similar errors in the actual exam.
Identify Question Types
Familiarize yourself with various question types in the reading section, such as main idea, detail-oriented, inference, and vocabulary questions. Knowing the distinctive features of each question type will help you approach them strategically.
Improve Reading Speed
Practice reading passages at a pace that allows you to grasp the main ideas and key details efficiently. Avoid reading too slowly, as it can lead to comprehension issues, and be mindful not to sacrifice understanding for speed.
Use Process of Elimination
When faced with multiple-choice questions, eliminate obviously incorrect answer choices to increase your chances of selecting the correct one. This systematic approach improves your odds, especially when you are uncertain about a particular answer.
Consider Context in Vocabulary Questions
In vocabulary questions, pay attention to the context. Analyze the surrounding sentences to infer the meaning of the word based on the overall passage context.
Practice with Authentic Material
Utilize official TOEFL practice materials and sample tests to simulate the exam environment as closely as possible. This exposure to authentic TOEFL content will familiarize you with the format and types of questions you'll encounter on test day.
General TOEFL Tips
Here are some tips that you can apply to all sections of the TOEFL exam, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Study Academic English
Unlike some other English exams like the general IELTS test, the TOEFL is all about academic English. You may not have previously studied this kind of language before. Don't worry—that's what this book is all about!
Practice Focusing for 2-3 Hours at a Time
This test takes a long time—around 2.5 hours for the paper-based one, and 3-4 hours for the computer one. Put your phone away and practice studying for a long period of time, without taking breaks. Get used to focusing for hours.
Eat Breakfast and Get a Good Sleep
Make sure you're at your best for the exam. Get enough sleep the night before. It's a waste of time to cram
and pull an all-nighter!
It's best to be sharp and focused. Make sure to eat a good, healthy breakfast beforehand.
Bring a small snack to eat during the short breaks. Wear a t-shirt and bring a sweater along with you. This way, you can adapt to a hot or cold room and remain comfortable.
Improve your English Typing Skills
You may be proficient at typing on a keyboard in your first language, but what about English? If you're doing the computer-based exam, this is a key factor. Make sure to do an online tutorial to improve your speed and accuracy.
If you're doing the paper based exam, be sure to bring sharpened pencils, an eraser, and a selection of nice pens.
Answer Every Single Question
On a multiple choice test with 4 questions, you have a 25% chance of randomly guessing the right answer. However, the good news is that there are usually 1 or 2 answers that are obviously not correct. Eliminate 1 of them, and you have a 33% chance. Eliminate 2, and you have a 50% chance of getting it right.
All that to say, never leave blanks on this exam. Answer every single question. Try to eliminate some answers, if possible, and then make your best guess. For the speaking portion, just say something. You may get partial points.
