      A great book! I haven’t came across any author who combined evolutionary and psychological astrology so far. Lots of analogies shown in a new and logical way. This book isn’t a repetition of concepts but sheds a new light on understanding Saturn. Totally recommend!

    Structure of Consciousness: Saturn in the Birth Chart

    In traditional astrology, Saturn has been associated with a number of negative things, especially karma (of the burdensome type), past life sins for which one must pay, physical deformities, moral deviations, and basically anything associated with pain and sorrow. As a malefic planet, Saturn was associated with confinement and punishment.2

    As some branches of Vedic astrology would explain, Saturn is to be feared and respected as the lord of karma who denies or delays the pleasures of life. However, most Vedic texts provide certain remedies (mantras or charitable actions) that can appease Saturn’s wrath and harshness, especially as it goes over sensitive points in the natal chart.3

    In psychological astrology, however, natal Saturn is usually associated with familial, social, and behavioral conditioning formed in the individual’s psyche during the early phase of life (specifically, before the first Saturn return at about age 29). The individual is encouraged to become aware of the existence of these psychological patterns so that he or she can work with them in the direction of personal growth. It is also possible that our initial fears and difficulties give us the rare gift of understanding and empowerment.4

    In addition, some schools of psychological astrology would view natal Saturn as a necessary impetus for growth, i.e., a slow and steady dosage of healthy distress that would eventually push the individual to overcome a certain obstacle in a particular area of the psyche in hopes of achieving a level of mastery in that area. In this sense, one’s initial weakness, as symbolized by the condition of Saturn in the natal chart, can very well lead to excellence and even recognition over time.5

    However, a third approach is also possible: in evolutionary astrology, natal Saturn usually denotes the method by which we construct our conscious experience, as well as the likely quality and form of our consciousness.6 It is important to remember that in evolutionary astrology, Uranus denotes the unconscious mind of the individual. Chiron is probably a tentative bridge7 between the unconscious and conscious realms of the psyche. Saturn, on the other hand, represents that which becomes fully conscious after being filtered through external factors such as ancestry, family, friends, society, culture, or nation. In this sense, Saturn is a symbol of everything we consciously construct and perpetuate, whether it be habits, conditioning, or simply the way we construct our world or defend our perception of it in general.8

    In addition, because Saturn rules Capricorn, which opposes Cancer (the sign associated with the mother figure), Saturn can also represent the disciplining and conditioning aspect of the father, as opposed to the creative and encouraging aspect of the father symbolized by the Sun.9

    It is also important to understand that father does not necessarily refer to the male parent, as the word is used here to refer to the parental figure whose primary role is to condition the child to behave in socially acceptable ways and to become a productive member of a tribe or community. In contrast, the mother would be a parental figure whose primary role is to nurture the child and provide emotional protection in an unconditional manner. Ideally, through a healthy interaction of the Cancer and Capricorn archetypes (the Moon and Saturn), the individual will feel loved at home and will also be able to respect the law and properly function within a social framework.

    We can also think of Saturn as that which gives finitude to the infinite (Neptune). Human consciousness, relative to our earthly experience, can only take place within certain boundaries in order to have any meaning at all: we live only one life out of many possible lives, so that we can make that one life as personal as possible.10 We see only one world out of many possible worlds, so that we can make that world a familiar place in which we can operate safely.11 In other words, Saturn is the line that is masterfully drawn in the sands of infinity to create a unique shape that is only like us and cannot be claimed by anyone else.

    In this sense, natal Saturn is as vital to our individuation process as the natal Sun: it shows how far the light of our Sun can travel before leaving the visible horizon, and thus how far we can reach to create something tangible enough to be seen, recognized, and rewarded. As the Sun inspires and Saturn defines, the individual will have two wings to fly to the zenith of human realization of his or her God-given potential.12

    As a general rule, the area of the chart dominated by Saturn usually indicates initial inhibition, and yet there will be a lifelong potential for excellence in that very same area. Furthermore, the state of Saturn in the birth chart would indicate how our consciousness is formed and functions, as well as how the disciplining aspect of a parental figure was perceived. As you read the following chapters, it is important to keep in mind that what is presented here is a very general outline of the possible connotations of various Saturn placements and configurations. Saturn has specific implications in each birth chart, especially in relation to the age, consciousness, and life experience of the person whose chart is being read. Therefore, please use the information in this book only as a
