About this ebook

Matthew Sorrows looked at Stone, and at the badge. It was definitely a very attractive proposition. He held the badge in the palm of his hand. It shone as it reflected sunlight from outside. Sorrows thought about it. Perhaps he would look good with a badge tacked on his person.

Being in the saddle for long hours comes naturally for John J. Law.  Raised on a modern-day ranch in Wyoming, John has had many experiences. Some good, some bad. He weaves many of these experiences into the stories he writes. A life long bachelor, he says he has to use his imagination for that part.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Coming Home

Matthew Sorrows rode his horse along the familiar trail. He knew this land by heart. The old log lay where it always did some years back. It was now covered with more moss and fungi, but it was still there. The mountains and the pines still surrounded the trail, and this gave him a little comfort. He knew that the mountains were something eternal. They were there when he’d left for the war, and they were still here now. He knew that they would still be standing, long after he was gone. The whole land was a silent observer to all the killing and the madness of men. Sorrows was simply a small player in the chaos.

Sorrows heard a familiar sound overhead. It was the squawking of vultures above him. The large birds spread their wings and flew above the man and his steed. It was a curious sight for him. Vultures were known to fly around an area where there were corpses and death all around. As far as Sorrows could see, no one was dead. Not yet anyway. Perhaps the vultures were expecting some kind of death and destruction to happen. Once it did, they would be free to descend from the skies and come upon some easy meals, as they always did.

Damn scavengers are expecting something. Sorrows mused.

The sun shone overhead, and the sky was a clear blue. There was a cool breeze that blew around. Some of the vultures threw a shade across the sun as they flew overhead. It was a nice day with hardly any indication of violence that could erupt.

Sorrows was well aware of how suddenly and instantly peace could be shattered. He had marched around the country in days just like this and participated in several battles during the Great War. The memories of that horrible war were still heavy and burdened sorrows as he rode back home. The memories were so
