Importance of Programming
It was a bright Sunday afternoon, and Lily decided to spend quality time with her daughter, Amy.
They eagerly opened the DIY Robotics kit that they had bought online. As they assembled the robot, Lily noticed a very puzzled look on her daughter’s face. Some of the instructions seem to be missing, and one of the components seemed faulty. Not sure what to do Lily called on her cousin, Steve. Steve was a young kid as well in the same school, but he had spent a few months learning programming. He had not touched a robot just like Amy. But Steve approached the situation differently. He looked up instructions for a similar robotic kit online, and then viewed a map of the different items on YouTube. He figured out which component was faulty and found a replacement part. With Steve’s help, they continued with the task of building the robot.
Within a few hours, they completed the task with no issues. Steve’s brief interaction with programming had improved his problem-solving skills by an immeasurable amount, and he was able to apply these principles to problems outside the computer screen.
Not only did Steve fix the robot, but he also ignited Amy’s love for robotics, and Lily got to spend some bonding time with her daughter, Amy.
Now let’s look at another example. James was a 10-year-old boy who dreaded doing his Math homework. His parents were worried about him falling behind the rest of the class and getting bad grades. They had tried a bunch of math tutors but none of them really seemed to help. None of them were able to hold James’ attention. However, James had a passion for computer games, and he would spend hours playing them after school. James’ uncle came up with the idea of teaching James how to program computer games to see if that would help James at school. James enrolled in a coding course which he attended every day after school. Even though James struggled initially, he grew to love the course. Over the weeks and months of the course, his problem solving and logical thinking improved tremendously. He was not only able to complete his homework, but he was also able to do it quickly. He was able to outcompete the rest of his class at Math and Physics, and also had learnt a skill that none of his classmates could do. And he had a lot of fun doing it.
Both James and Amy are good examples of how programming can change a kids’ approach to solving a problem. The problem can be a Math problem, a physics problem, an engineering problem or even another programming problem. The logical approach to solving a problem can be used by anyone for the rest of their life, at school and at work.
