Chapter 38
Assessment Summary
––––––––
One of the features and the most exciting and valuable part of a
professional assessment used by managers is to give them an evaluation of where the artists are in their career. If management feels their demo has merit, and the artist has what it takes to break-through they will talk to the artist about submitting their package to record labels or to a connected entertainment attorney if that seems feasible for both parties. If you are an unsigned band, singer-songwriter, or solo artist remember you need a creditable source to submit your demo to no matter who it is.
A reputable source is a management firm, producer, or entertainment attorney who deals with labels on a regular basis. This cannot be emphasized enough! If a manager is a well-respected and highly trusted source of new artists. Record labels, music publishers, and music producers look to them and look forward to receiving recommended submissions.
There are no guarantees. Never is when it comes to landing a good record contract. If anyone guarantees anything at all to you in this business, start running and do not stop. Bottom line, if they like what they hear and see, they will talk about shopping, management, consulting, or production deal with you. Remember, credibility in the industry is paramount. They just cannot and will
not submit something in which they do not fully believe. They know what sells, and what does not! Any independent service who will submit your demo for a fee without listening to it or caring what it is all about you better take off running again. You are wasting your time and money.
Do not submit anything to anyone in the music business when you are not ready or prepared to do just that. Managers are usually looking for new viable talent, but that manager will not sign or submit to you until you are ready. Your manager will decide if you are ready, but if you are not there yet, they will want to help you in the hope that we can be the ones to shop you or sign you. That is how we really make our money. What we really are looking for is artists we can sink our teeth into and roll with.
