YOUCAT Study Guide - Mark Brumley
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the YOUCAT Study Guide
Pope Benedict has asked you to study YOUCAT, which stands for Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church. YOUCAT is the first worldwide catechism specifically designed by and for young adults.
Though based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, YOUCAT is written in a style and format just for you. It has been translated into multiple languages and distributed throughout the world. As a result, YOUCAT is having a profound effect on young Catholics everywhere, by helping them know and love Jesus Christ and the faith of the Church he founded.
And not a moment too soon, for, as Pope Benedict XVI writes in his foreword, Catholics need to know their faith now more than ever: Yes, you need to be more deeply rooted in the faith than the generation of your parents so that you can engage the challenges and temptations of this time with strength and determination.
This Study Guide is designed to help you unpack YOUCAT from front to back. Its probing questions and thought-provoking exercises will help you read YOUCAT with understanding and joy, as you deepen your relationship with the God who loves you and has a plan for your happiness.
How to Use the Study Guide
The Study Guide is divided into the same four parts as YOUCAT, which are the same four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Yes, there is a pattern here. Though the parts can be studied in any order, it is best to let the Study Guide lead you through YOUCAT by starting at the beginning and proceeding through each section as it comes.
The four main sections of both catechisms and of this Study Guide can be summed up as follows: what we believe, how we celebrate what we believe, how we live what we believe, and how we pray. For each of these sections, the Study Guide has several topics for study, discussion, further reflection, and application in your daily life.
With each topic, the first task is to read YOUCAT. To help you do this, there is a brief introduction to the topic (Behind YOUCAT), followed by a reading assignment (Read YOUCAT) and short-answer questions (What Does YOUCAT Say?). In the numbered paragraphs and along the margins of YOUCAT are quotations from the Bible. To help you read and reflect on these, there are a couple of questions about those passages, as well as some other important Bible texts (What Does the Bible Say?). Next, there are discussion questions that can be answered in either large or small groups (YOU Chat). For further reflection, there are some questions to answer either in your discussion group or on your own (YOU Reflect), followed by tasks for you to do in the coming week that will help you apply what you have learned (YOUChallenge).
PART 1
WHAT WE BELIEVE—
EMBRACING AND
LIVING THE TRUTH
Topic 1: Existence
Behind YOUCAT
Why am I here? Where did I come from? What’s my purpose in Life? We all ask these questions about our existence. None of us is alone in wondering about the meaning of Life. In fact, people have been asking these perplexing questions for thousands of years, and they have been Looking for answers in religions and philosophies.
Read YOUCAT
Read nos. 1-2.
What Does YOUCAT Say?
1. What are the three things no. 1 says that God made us to do while we are on earth?
2. To help us find our way home to heaven, what did God do for us?
3. Based on no. 2, why did God make us and send Jesus to lead us to heaven?
What Does the Bible Say?
1. Who does Jesus say he is in John 14:6?
2. In his letter to Timothy (1 Tim 2:4), what does St. Paul say God desires?
YOU Reflect
God created us out of love—because he is love itself. True love desires the good of the one who is loved. God created us to be loved and to love by sharing in his goodness. He did this because he knew it would be good for us; he knew that this would make us happy. Ultimately, our lives only begin to make sense when we embrace the reality of God’s love for us and his desire for us to love him in return—not for his sake but for ours.
1. What difference does it make for us and others when we firmly believe that God made us and loves us?
2. How does our hope in heaven affect the way we experience and live our lives on earth?
3. Have you ever loved someone who rejected your love? If so, how did it make you feel? If not, how do you suppose you would feel if it happened to you?
YOU Chat
1. Is there anything in no. 1 or no. 2 that is new to you? If so, what? If not, explain in your own words what these Q&As mean.
2. What is the most challenging thing for you to believe in no. 1 or no. 2? Why?
YOU Challenge
Remember: Remind yourself every day this week that God made you and loves you and wants you to know him and love him too.
Surrender: Each morning, give your day to God and ask him to guide you. Ask him to make his presence in your life real to you.
Notice: At the end of each day, take note of the good things God did for you and asked you to do through the circumstances of your life.
Topic 2: Cravings, Desires, and Lattes
Behind YOUCAT
Do you ever get a craving for something? A pizza, a burger, or ice cream? Maybe a latte? Cravings or desires for food and drink are part of human life. We also have desires for other things—for example, for wealth, health, love, friendship, knowledge, and meaningful work. Most people would say they need such things to live well on earth—to be happy.
Of course people can also crave the wrong things—things harmful to them or too much of a good thing, which can wind up hurting them. What’s more, even when people have what they need to be happy in this Life, they find themselves unsatisfied on a deeper Level. They want something more—a permanent, enduring happiness, and a relationship with someone who can make sense of everything and bring complete happiness.

What Does YOUCAT Say?
1. What did St. Augustine say about our hearts?
2. Explain how fulfillment of desires in this Life compares with that of the next life.
3. According to no. 285, what do we need in
