The Mysterious Mistresses of Mormon Lake Lodge - Alexie Linn
Chapter 1 – In the Beginning
It all started with a simple escape from the desert southwest heat and an ad on Craigslist.
The ad was a barter opportunity. Here’s how it read:
‘Camp for free in the forest in exchange for helping 3 old ladies get their house in order. No special skills needed.’
If Sally had known the rest of the story, would she have answered the ad?
It doesn’t matter now. She answered the ad.
The ‘three old ladies’ were ecstatic to have engaged a fourth in their favor. Martha said, in her deep, officious voice, Come as soon as you can! We need help!
Joan Freed, the rebel life coach and bossy niece of Sally, argued with her spunky Aunt. They were loading Sally’s valuables into the Conex box she’d bought for secure storage.
What do you know about these ladies? How do you know they’re not witches looking for a live one to sacrifice on their altar?
Sally laughed, "Oh, Joan! Don’t be silly! If anything looks or feels hokey, I’ll shove it into go gear and get out of town before sundown.
How can I look this gift horse in the mouth? I call it opportunity knocking. And I’m answering the door.
Deal with it!"
Joan rolled her eyes and snorted. "Well, expect me in the very near future. I’ll be joining you when I get my own Conex box filled. Jenny might come, too.
Maybe I’ll even call Delores and Mary Linn. We can spend our summer together in the tall pines of the north.
What do you think of that!"
Sally chuckled, I think that’s just fine. As long as we each have our own space to cogitate in. I haven’t seen your sister and gravestone hunting niece in several years. Maybe we can locate some old graveyards for a lark.
They each grabbed a heavy-duty steel door and swung it closed in the middle. With the metal bars in place, Joan squeezed the padlock closed.
"Well, Aunty. You might still have a bag lady camping out in your igloo. But the worst he or she can do now is make a mess. No more having to replace valuable tools and weapons. Just food and water; I hope.
Did you find somebody to take a spin through here often?"
They trekked back to the house to double-check the emptiness.
Bobby’s mom said she will when she can. Bobby knows what to look for. I’ll miss him. Maybe he can come and stay with me for a few days now and then. He could ride the airport shuttle to Flagstaff. I’ll mention that... now that you thought of it.
She snickered. And then there’s you and Jenny – if you’re here.
Don’t count on that. We’re considering our options for a monsoon break, too. As I told you. Is your memory going?
"Ha ha. Only when it wants to.
I think we’ve done everything we could to preserve and protect my place, Joany. I’m going to sleep in the van and head out about 2 AM. I’ll get through Phoenix while everyone is dead to the world. And the sun won’t turn my van into an oven." She closed the door to her desert igloo, but only dummy locked it.
No point in making it too hard to get in. Maybe they won’t tear my place up if it’s relatively easy access.
She swept the landscape with her arm. We’ve got the cameras on place. They’re up and running. Young Bobby did a fine job of setting the system up. I should be able to put the fear into invaders over my phone.
Sally frowned and sighed. I know it’s a crapshoot, but I can’t let the vandals rule my life.
At the door to Joan’s ‘Cream-puff’, her niece’s pride and joy old Chevy truck, Joan pulled Sally in for a bear hug.
You be careful. Text me everyday so I know where to find you. If you don’t, I’ll have the cops out looking for you. Just sayin’.
She let Sally squirm out of the hug. Be cool. Be safe. And have fun!
Joan climbed into her truck and left Sally to her own devices.
Sally put together a peanut butter and pickle sandwich for her supper. She closed up the van and crawled into her bedroll.
By daylight she was pulling into the compound where Martha said they would meet up. But Martha hadn’t said when the ladies would arrive.
Chapter 2 – Sally, Meet the Mistresses
The compound was north of Mormon Lake Lodge. In the tall Ponderosa pines. The morning was shivery compared to the desert. But it smelled heavenly.
Sally pulled on her flannel shirt and jacket. Then slid the van door open and stepped out onto the forest floor of last winter’s pine needles.
The needles were deep. They sprung and crunched under her steps. She made note to be extra careful with any kind of a flame or ember.
She spied a cabin and two sheds. One shed held an old wood stack. The wood was dry, dirty, and had dead grass growing between the blocks. I guess the ladies haven’t been here all winter.
Sally doodled away her day. Keeping an eye and an ear out for her bosses. To occupy herself, she made a list of obvious cleaning and repair chores. She assumed she would be responsible for outside clean-up, too.
And, breaking her own rule twice now of ‘don’t assume anything’, she assumed they were held up in traffic when nightfall came. And hadn’t bothered to let her know they’d be late.
She heated her beef stew in a pouch, ate it, locked up, and tucked in.
Startled awake by a tap on her shoulder, she tensed. Grabbed her walking stick that lay next to her, and swung hard as she sat up in bed. But she connected only with the refrigerator.
Whoa!
a deep, authoritative voice ordered. Be careful with that thing! You’ll hurt yourself.
Sally shook her head. Huh? Who are you? How did you get in here?
The voice chuckled. I’m Martha. We spoke on the phone. You’re here for me and my two friends. Remember?
Sally reached for her flashlight. She switched it on and shown it toward the voice.
Behind the voice was a gray-haired, busty lady in a red hat and purple dance outfit. She sat on Sally’s folding chair. I had to sit on your chair without a proper invite. Your ceiling makes me stand with my neck kinked.
Sally flustered, How did you get in here without me unlocking the door?
She laughed, Oh, we have our ways. That’s Georgia and Marietta perched at the foot of your bed. Marietta’s very short, but even she had to sit. Your ceiling is much too low for comfortable living.
Sally shook her head, trying to clear the sleepwebs away. It works for me. If you’d arrived in the daytime, we could have met outside, where the sky’s the limit. I suggest we meet outside after dawn.
Martha shook her head. That won’t work for us. We only come out at night.
Georgia and Marietta tee-heed.
Sally rubbernecked between the ladies. Noting the other two women wore the same outfits. Well then, ladies. This won’t work. I’m a morning person. I only function and come out in the daytime.
She hunkered down into her flannel bedroll.
You gals can see yourselves out the way you came in. I’ll be gone in the morning.
Martha gasped, No! Wait! We need you to help us. We just can’t do this job alone!
Sally stuck her hand out from under the covers and waved them off. "Off with you. I’m going back to sleep. If you’re here when I get up, we’ll talk. But not now.
Goodnight, ladies."
Sally awoke at her usual 2 AM. She turned the light on that hung over the desk... sometimes a dinner table. She choked when she saw Martha, still occupying her only chair.
Why are you here? I thought I dreamed you.
Martha yawned. Because we need you. We’re meeting you on your terms – for now.
Sally shook her head. You’ll have to move. I need to get my coffee perking. You’re blocking my hot plate.
Martha moved to the driver’s seat. "Fine. Have your chair. But you’re getting mighty officious. We can be pushed only so far...
Just sayin’."
Sally gawked at her. I’m 87-years-old. What could you do to me that I haven’t already lived?
Martha sputtered, Well. Well. We could haunt you.
Sally chuckled, Been haunted by the best... my own drama director mother. What else you got?
Doesn’t it frighten you that we’re ghosts?
Sally shook her head, Not so much. It surprises me. I didn’t expect to come 200 miles to meet ghosts. Why didn’t you just come to my place if you wanted my help?
Martha’s double chin squished to her chest. Because we can’t.
Oh? Why can’t you?
Because we’re stuck. This cabin is our limit for travel from the lodge. The cabin is Marietta’s. We need your help to break-thru and join our families in the hereafter.
Wow! I admit that’s a new one. How can I help?
We have a score to settle. Being transparent, we can’t physically punch anybody in the kisser. We’ve been trying for 30-odd years. All we can do is harass by levitating things. Georgia has managed to turn on the jukebox and turn off equipment. But we can’t connect with another being.
Sally’s mouth dropped. "Boy, did you get the wrong number. I’m a lover, not a fighter. I don’t punch people in the kisser – or anywhere else
