HOW TO SPEAK
Like locals
5 tips to Speak Arabic and mingle with locals.
––––––––
1. What’s the secret?
I had a wonderful experience, as a student living in Damascus, Syria which I am going to share with you in this article. Most Arabic locals speak dialects only those who has an education standard will speak modern Arabic. You see, the top students at the university are foreign student, they are Asian students. These students actually came from a background that they never learn to write or read Arabic. I got some reports on them. Here is the research work: They would practice Arabic everyday diligently and say out loud the words and phrase, they will speak daily using the Arabic words and expressions.
So, what’s the catch? I had told earlier in my previous article about recording your own voice over using audio software which is a downloadable software. Well, that is a tool to kick off your Arabic proficiency, but sometimes, it is wrongly used. You are not supposed to read from the book. Firstly, you need to know the phrase in a given topic of your choice and record without referring to the book. The point here is to speak what you know and listen how your voice sounds. Is it awkward, does it sound weird? Hmm, you be your own judge.

2. Get Arabic resource, the more tools the better
My next experience is teaching at the embassy. My student is actually a professor who will be learning a new foreign language for the first time and later deployed to an Arabic continent. Before teaching I visualize myself and ask a question: What if I am in his shoes going to work in Dubai or Yemen? May be the pay is real good money. But I was thinking of the phobia meeting new people which I can’t speak or understand the lingo. I have tried teaching using real authentic Arabic book written in Arabic script. If this student starts their first lesson in this type of learning tool, they will definitely collapse and surrender. So, what’s the tip: Get hold of Arabic books with transliteration and English translation. The best resource is having MP3 audios, Power Point slides with quiz and if possible, videos to learn from a native speaker. The key to learn Arabic and getting your foot ready to jump into an immerse Arabic course, is to learn the basic reading skills till you manage to reach an advance reading program. Once
