For others, coin collecting is more than a hobby; it is a way of life. Rare artefacts are sought for, often with the use of metal detectors, and are prized for their rarity and beauty.
This introduction to coin collecting will extend your horizons on what coin collecting is all about, regardless of why you are interested in numismatics.
Chapter 1
What is Numismatics?
Numismatics is the study and collecting of coins, tokens, and other coin-like items used as currency over time. The phrase may also apply to the study of money and other payment mechanisms that individuals use to purchase goods and services and pay off debts.
The research focuses on the physical qualities of the artifacts, such as their appearance, year of creation, metallurgy, manufacturing location, and the political, economic, and historical milieu at the time of manufacture.
The name numismatics
is derived from the French word numismatiques,
which is derived from the Latin word numismatis.
The name numismatics
first appeared in English in 1829, and it was derived from the adjective numismatic.
A brief History of Coins and Coin Collection
Around 600 B.C., the Lydians, a monarchy linked to ancient Greece and situated in modern-day Turkey, produced the world's first coins, which jingled around in the pockets of the Lydians. They were composed of electrum, a gold and silver alloy, and featured a stylized lion's head.
Money has been around for a long time. Shells were used as money in ancient China, and Mesopotamians devised a banking system approximately 5,000 years ago that allowed individuals to deposit
crops, animals, and other commodities for safekeeping or exchange.
But it wasn't until the actual coins appeared—money for the sake of money—that the societal ramifications of having a currency began to take hold. It was believed that minting those first coins was motivated by the need to maintain order in a society that had grown more complicated.
Coin collection predates the invention of coinage (that is, sometime around the late seventh century BCE). Pliny and Plutarch, for example, mention notable art collections, which would certainly have included unique coins recognized for their aesthetic merits and signed by well-known painters.
Following the terrible Wall Street collapse of 1929, it is believed that the only assets of interest to jittery speculators were exquisite art, rare vehicles, and antique coins from the Great Depression. Since the 1930s, the rule of thumb has appeared to hold throughout every successive time of financial market volatility, as the three groups have tended to demonstrate their worth repeatedly.
In the world of collectibles, rare gold and silver coins are unusual because they have inherent value based on their precious metal content as well as historical importance. The melt value of gold and silver bullion is determined by global financial markets, but precious metal bars are not bought for their beauty or rarity. They're a commodity.
For as long as coins have been created, people have hoarded them for their bullion value. Coin collecting for its aesthetic worth, on the other hand, was a later phenomenon. Scholars and state treasuries collected and cataloged coins according to archaeological and historical evidence from ancient Rome and medieval Mesopotamia.
Individual residents may have also collected antique, strange, or commemorative coins as a cheap and portable form of art. During festivals and other important occasions, according to Suetonius' De vita Caesarum (The Lives of the Twelve Caesars), published in the first century CE, the emperor Augustus would sometimes distribute antique and unusual coins to friends and courtiers.
Coin collection and appreciation as we know it now originated during the 14th century, during the Renaissance. It was regarded as the hobby of kings
because it could only be afforded by the exceedingly
