About this ebook

Peter, the nonchalant, overconfident, and somewhat reckless one of a group of friends, is trying to figure life out. Hoping for his fifteen minutes of fame and to someday land on easy street, he joins his friends on an expedition to climb to a sacred grotto hidden beyond a glacier in the stone spires. Not shy about his lack of faith among his friends who believe in God, it doesn't take long before the frozen landscape and wilderness have him starting to question himself. What would you do if you were in Peter's shoes?

    About the Author

    Reaching the Peak

The day dawned sunny and clear. Morning rays glanced off the pristine crystalline glacier, dashing it with pastel hints of pink, lavender, and blue. Deeper sapphire rivers sliced across the snowy surface, outlining the crevices lacing across the glacier that had not yet been bathed with the morning rays. The air was crisp and pure. The wind was a constant presence brushing over any exposed skin and stinging it with its icy chill.

The wind whistled passed the crevices accompanied by the occasional cracking and popping deep within the ice, creating a chilling symphony. A symphony accented by the crunch of cleats digging into the ice and the blow of a climber exhaling deeply.

Dark shadowy spires rose from the frozen surface beyond the glacier, threatening to pierce the sky. That was their destination, a chance to stand on the razor's edge, reach for heaven, and view the frozen beauty and valleys beyond. Hidden within those spires was a fabled grotto said to have been carved out hundreds of years earlier by native people coming to pray and make offerings. They, too, wanted to give thanks at the grotto for all they had been given; it was the perfect place among God's raw beauty.

The four friends packed up their small camp and prepared to start the last leg of their climb across the glacier as the first rays illuminated the ice shelf. They set out to make the final ascent, a daisy chain of brightly colored packs, coats, goggles, and boots, linked together by a candy-cane-striped rope.

The frigid air stiffened the face, despite the protective mask, making it hard to smile, unlike the rest of their bodies hidden safely under the protective layers of clothing. The body, just warm enough to be comfortable, not close to sweating, moved easily under the weight of a pack and climbing gear. Every climber, charged with excitement, smiled with anticipation; this was the day they were going to reach the peak, touch the sky, and give thanks.

A little more than an hour earlier, the energy was already evident in the tent.

Emily, what are you doing? We got to get packed up. We're going to summit today! Peter was stuffing his sleeping roll tightly into his pack, grinning widely at Emily where she sat and read.

Pipe down. Save your energy, Emily slapped back. You're going to need it. Besides, I'm just saying a few prayers. God has looked out for us this far, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us today. She closed her pocket bible and slipped it into her pack, then finished folding up and securing her bedroll.

Peter waved her words away, Whatever. We will have the glory this day. He smiled and gave her a stiff nod then continued stuffing his pack.

The bantering and excited conversation continued within the close confines of the tent
