About this ebook

A wild night might make a perfect mistake...

Lauren Hill has a problem. Her best friend Ryan is funny, kind, a successful screenwriter, drop-dead gorgeous...and gay. Even so, she's somehow found herself falling for him hard. That's bad because he's already in a loving relationship with Zach Cahill, a wealthy designer who also happens to be perfectly sexy and charming. The two of them make such a tempting sight that she's been hiding her fantasies of both men together...and both men with her. Ryan takes her out for her birthday, and a wild night with too much fun and too much champagne leads to Lauren's secret feelings spilling out in the most unexpected way. Only Zach happens to be out of town, and Ryan's here with her alone...

Ryan West is at his wit's end. He's bought a wedding ring for Zach, but he hasn't proposed yet. Why? Because he fears he's also in love with Lauren, his best friend since forever. She's always on his mind, and he keeps having these hot fantasies of Lauren and Zach kissing, and then both of them kissing him. He loves Zach and that will never change. But after Lauren's birthday celebration gets out of hand, he wakes up the next morning naked...with Lauren. The problem is, he doesn't remember what happened, and he's afraid he's destroyed his friendship with Lauren and ruined his relationship with Zach.

Zach has always been a free-spirited bisexual and quite wild when he was younger. Parties? Threesomes? Trysts on the beach? You name it, he's done it. But he's been dedicated to Ryan for years now, and that life is behind him. Or is it? Because Lauren might be a dear friend, but he can't help wanting her...and something tells him that Ryan does too. Unfortunately, he's forced to miss Lauren's birthday to visit his scheming grandmother whose health is failing. Zach's surprised to find his gold-digging ex-girlfriend has arrived too, part of a plot by his grandmother, and extortion is definitely on the table. Zach will do anything to protect the man he loves and the woman he's falling for. Then he returns home to discover that everything has changed...

    CHAPTER ONE

    Lauren

The creepy guy on table ten finally left a little after midnight. I thought he’d never go away. I almost handed him a cleaning rag and ordered him to help us finish closing the restaurant.

As soon as I heard Trina close and lock the front door, I ventured out into the restaurant from the server’s station. All the other tables had been cleared and wiped down. The chairs had been turned upside-down on the tabletops. Things were ready for us to leave. All but the recently vacated table ten.

Thank God he’s gone. I felt a little lighter now as I started to clear the table. I thought he was going to be here all night.

Trina grinned as she piled the salt and pepper shakers, candle, and flower vase into the bus tray. The beads on her cute, black-girl braids clacked together as she bent over. I think he was waiting for a good moment to ask for your number.

He could have done that at any time in the last two hours. I shuddered. Not that I would have let him have it. Didn’t his mother teach him it’s impolite to stare? He had been staring at my butt most of the time anyway.

Maybe he was dazzled by your feminine charms, Trina said, giggling. What if he had asked, though? Didn’t you say you and your friends had a plan to give creepy guys a fake number? Something like calling a completely random person?

I giggled. We did. A pizza joint. The Salvation Army. We never did it, though. No one ever really gave us the opportunity.

Trina shook her head. Not even Creepy Guy on ten? Damn, girl. You’re obviously doing something wrong.

Tell me about it. I took the bus tray into the kitchen and shoved the tablecloth and napkins into the laundry bag. Everyone else was already gone. Even the dishwashers.

But at least you got your two handsome, rich guys to take you out for your birthday. I get to go home and yell at my damn brother to turn down his damn music.

I grinned at her. Ryan and Zach had been adamant about taking me out for my birthday. Didn’t matter that it would be the wee hours of the morning. Par for the course when you wait tables at a place that seats till ten and always had an hour wait. Ryan and Zach didn’t care. They were both night owls like me. And there were lots of places open till 4:00 am in Chicago.

As long as there was champagne to go with their delicious company, I was determined to be happy. This was going to be a rough birthday for me though, so the champagne would be a necessity.

Trina was hovering near the waiter’s station when I came back. We always walked out two by two, just to be on the safe side.

What time they picking you up for the happy threesome? she asked.

I laughed, but I couldn’t help the erotic image that popped into my mind of the three of us writhing on a bed. Naked. Kissing…things. The image was hot enough that I felt my cheeks and the back of my neck grow warm.

I turned back to Trina, who was giving me a strange look.

    What?

You’re nuts, you know that, Lauren?

    Why do you say that?

I swear the three of you are joined at the hip. Don’t you get fed up with being the third wheel?

They’ve never made me feel like that. I shrugged. They’re my best friends. I’ve known Ryan since we were kids. Who else would I celebrate with?

    Your sister?

Alison is fast asleep at this hour. She considers getting up at dawn ‘sleeping in.’ Besides, I want to celebrate my last fun birthday with my two best friends. Alison isn’t exactly the party type.

A look of confusion passed over Trina’s face. "What are you talking about? Your last fun birthday? You’re twenty-nine, not ninety-nine. You make it sound like your life is going to end after today."

I knew better than most people that it could.

I’d always had a fear of reaching my thirtieth birthday, so I had made the most of my teens and twenties, not focused on a career, but trying to live life to the fullest. Now thirty was only a year away, and I was beginning to feel it. I was turning twenty-nine. Next year, I’d be at that place where I could no longer pretend I was still a kid.

I had one year left to make something of myself.

    What’s wrong? Trina asked.

I smiled up at her. Long story.

Come on. I tell you all my crap.

I sighed. Fine. When I was little, I did something dumb at school one day. Don’t even remember what it was. But my mom gave me this lecture. She told me I had to be responsible. I had to do what I was told, work hard, do well in school, so I could get a good job when I grew up and not be poor. Like her, having to work two jobs that didn’t have benefits just to afford a crappy apartment in a crappy neighborhood and never be able to give us anything nice. It was her thirtieth birthday when she gave me that lecture. She told me that I didn’t want to end up like her—thirty with no future. I took a breath. It was the last thing she ever told me.

Trina looked up at me, her eyes widening. What do you mean, the last thing?

She got hit by a car later that night, walking home from her second job. Drunk driver. Guy had three DUIs and was driving without a license.

    Holy shit. Trina looked stricken.

I shrugged, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. It was a long time ago.

The guy got twenty-one years. Alison and I hadn’t been allowed to attend the trial, but I remembered the talk. All the extended family conversations seeping under the bedroom door when they thought Alison and I were asleep.

Twenty-one years in prison. He would be getting out this year, if he wasn’t out already on parole. He got to walk back to a normal life. My mom would be gone forever.

    But that wasn’t the point.

The point was that random stuff happens. Even with a system that gave the guy three DUIs and took his license away, he was still able to get behind the wheel at a random time on a random night and randomly swerve off the road at a random spot where some woman was randomly walking home because she randomly missed the bus. All those random events aligning just right to take my mother out of the picture.

Wow, Trina said. I’m so sorry.

I quickly switched topics and put on the bright, bouncy smile I had created for being a server. Why are we talking about something so morbid? It’s my birthday. I get to spend it with the best men on the planet, Ryan and Zach.

Trina looked a little baffled at the quick change in topic. But she recovered quickly laughed. Yeah, yeah. God must hate us women because those two ‘best men on the planet’ only love each other. She nodded toward the door. Why don’t you head out? I’ll put all this away and close out your till.

Are you sure? You don’t want to walk out alone this late at night.

I’ll be fine. I got my mace. She nudged me in the ribs. Now go, before I change my mind and horn in on your date with your two boyfriends and make it a reverse Oreo.

I laughed and gave her an eye roll. "My two gay boyfriends, remember?"

Whatever. She waved at me over her shoulder as she turned to head back to the kitchen to lock up.

Quickly, I headed for the door, thinking about Ryan and Zach as boyfriends.

    I sighed. If only.

    Ryan

I couldn’t wait to see Lauren. Just thinking about her was enough to make me smile.

My driver, Sam, turned the Bentley Mulsanne limousine onto the narrow lane that ran behind the Lakeside Grill. I hoped Lauren would be ready. Her shifts could sometimes run late. But that didn’t matter. It was her birthday. We were going to celebrate it right.

Lauren was a continual breath of fresh air in my life. She was my muse, the inspiration for most of the female characters I created for my movies. The sweet Lauren. The angry Lauren. The sexy Lauren. The kick-ass Lauren. She was my oldest friend. I didn’t know what I would do without her.

We’d decided on something simple for her birthday. With Zach’s and my combined income, we could easily buy her half of Chicago. But Lauren wouldn’t want that. She would want something simple but fun. She was the opposite of the high-maintenance female. Most people saw us through a shimmer of dollar signs and luxury. Instead, Lauren saw us. The real us. And that was hard not to love.

My hands began to sweat. Being in love with your best friend when you were in a committed relationship with someone else was enough to keep you up at night. Feeling guilty. Feeling horny. God.

I rubbed my hands on my slacks and tried to shake the sudden attack of guilt. I’d bought Zach a ring. A year ago. But I still hadn’t found the right time to give it to him.

Sam pulled the Bentley to the curb and parked. I could see Lauren through the window, standing outside the restaurant’s back door in the glow from the security lights. She was still dressed in her waitress uniform. White blouse, black slacks, flat shoes. Her golden-red hair, normally in a tight ponytail, was loose about her shoulders with a hint of curl. She’d probably smell of grilled New York sirloin with top notes of lemon and seared sea bass. She always smelled good enough to eat after her shifts.

I’m not sure when I fell in love with her. We’d grown up together, back on Wagner Street when she went to live with her grandparents after her mother died. In high school, we’d cried on each other’s shoulders about guys. Teenage broken heart stuff. We’d always been there for each other. I never had to come out to her. She always knew I liked boys. Even when we were eight, we giggled over boys, and neither of us ever thought it was weird. Because of her, I never had to question who I was or what I was. I just always felt accepted and…safe.

I picked up the champagne flute I’d set aside and poured her a glass of champagne so it would be ready when she got into the limo. Zach was friends with Lauren too. He’d become fast friends with Lauren the first time he’d met her. He might have understood about my feelings for Lauren, but I had never broached the subject with him. I was too afraid. I was in love with Zach, too. And there was no way I would do anything that might ruin our relationship.

Could you be in love with two people at once?

Even wilder, could you know you were gay and then fall in love with a woman? Your best friend to boot?

Lauren gave me a wave and smiled, even though I knew she couldn’t see me through the tinted windows.

I pressed the button to put the window down and gave her a smile. Happy birthday, lady.

Ryan! She hurried over and leaned down to the window. She’d taken off her bowtie and had unbuttoned the top few buttons of her blouse. I could see into the dark space to the swell of her breasts behind her tan, lacy bra. My cock began to press against my zipper,
