About this ebook

Tenants and Travelers: From Pond to Pasture—Incorporating poetry, especially my own, was a practice I began early in my teaching career. Fun for me, fun for my students, and a sneaky good way to double down on subjects and concepts.

Tenants and Travelers approaches living things from two biomes: the pond and the pasture. I felt the feature character presented in each poem through the prism of their own biome would be more meaningful, memorable, and relatable. The

    The Pond

Sheltering, meeting place, shading, quenching, competing—

A great mixing bowl of—rippling, bubbling, splashing life—

    interacting at a snail’s pace—Prevailing.

    The Pasture

    Grazing, satisfying—digging, crawling, chasing, climbing—

    Food chain, strong, stronger, strongest—

    growling, warning, purring life—

    interacting fiercely—Who prevails?

    The Getaway—Pond Fishing

    A Grandmother Memory

Pack the Rambler, rods and reels

    Night crawlers, the ideal bait.

Don the ball cap—today’s sun bonnet

    Take your seat and

    wait—

    wait—

    wait!

    Mama’s patience, very slight,

But she could reel in—through the night!

Perch or catfish on the line—

    Untangle hooks, and then divine

Where the fish are biting best.

    Sweating brow, can of worms,

no talking, were the fishing terms.

    and later we would rest!

Hands that fish and then prepare,

the meal that followed, with modest flare.
