Answering the Call: A Guide to Resilience for Caregivers of Persons with Dementia
()
About this ebook
The title of the book, Answering the Call, is a reference to my nursing career with a focus on caregiver support and appropriate nursing care of persons with dementia. The call is also a reference to spiritual guidance and support during dark, stressful, and lonely times during this very important type of caregiving. Though the book is written for family caregivers of persons with dementia, health care professionals can also glean helpful tools from my toolbox, from which I have contributed from more than four decades of nursing. The scriptures throughout the book are woven in to comfort the caregiver while making sense and driving more meaning into the challenging responsibility of this type of caregiving.

About the Author
Dr. Aaron spent several years as a member of the board of directors for the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Chapter of Illinois and currently participates in the Research and Scholarly Activities Committee of the Alzheimer’s Association. Dr. Aaron has over forty years of experience caring for elderly adults with dementia and supporting family caregivers. The author has devoted her professional career to the education of family caregivers and nursing students on effective, compassionate care for this ever-growing population. Advocacy initiatives include supporting the need for more research to find a cure for the disease and effective behavior modifications to manage the progression of the disease. Dr. Aaron also found her voice during visits to Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. to provide clarity to legislators to make the disease of Alzheimer’s a priority, which preceded the 2010 National Alzheimer’s Disease Plan. Her research with family caregivers of persons with dementia has led to a national and international presence. She also has publications on the subject, including journals highlighting the importance of adding geropsychiatric content into the nursing curriculum, recruiting African American caregivers into research studies, interdisciplinary dementia care, and book chapters in caregiver support. Currently, Dr. Aaron serves as the chancellor of St. John’s College of Nursing in Springfield, Illinois.
Foreword
Charlene Aaron is the consummate caregiver and an ideal person to write this book. Dr. Aaron was the primary caregiver for her mother as she dealt with diabetes and heart problems and also shared that endeavor with siblings. She had her own business of providing care to persons in the community who wanted to stay in their own homes and needed caregiving assistance. She has served with the state’s Alzheimer’s Association to work to provide support for caregivers. She has a special heart for caregiving and caregivers.
