Introduction
For yet a little while and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
—Hebrews 10:37–38
The just live by faith.
Years ago, I went through what seemed absolutely devastating to me at the time. I was serving as assistant pastor in the Church where I had my initial salvation experience and had come to know and love the Lord. Our pastor was across country, establishing a church in California. I remember the Spirit giving me clear teaching for our midweek services, and I remember the intense anointing on our Sunday morning services. The Church had many young people, sixteen and older, and they were praying in the Spirit and growing in the Lord. The Church was moving and growing while I was serving. Then a situation developed in which a fellow minister misrepresented my service to our pastor. I was harshly rebuked and sat down. I understood endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, so I made no defense for myself but followed my pastor’s instructions. For over a year, I felt like such a failure. I felt deeply that I had failed God. I repented over and over and over. One day, while working alone in our church office, I began rehearsing, one more time, the tragedy of my ministry. I began repenting again and pleaded with God to show me how I could make things right. The Spirit of God spoke these words into my heart and spirit: The just shall live by faith.
At that moment, all the defeat and anguish and turmoil in my life ceased. I began to weep aloud with tears streaming down my face. Overwhelmed, I understood for the first time that my faith would make me right with God. How simple. My faith justified me before my Lord. I was freed from my guilt and shame. My faith made me whole. My pleading and crying did not make me right with God. My faith justified me.
This became a turning point in my relationship with the Lord Jesus and my heavenly Father. My eyes were enlightened with the understanding that I was accepted by God in the Beloved, and that my missteps and mess-ups did not breach the covenant that God had established in Christ Jesus throughout all eternity. This is the simplicity that comes with faith. My conscious journey of faith began with this revelation.
To understand why the just shall live by faith, I feel we must examine this text in the original Greek in which it was written. Who are the just, and what living do the just have by faith? Strong’s Concordance defines the just as those whose way of thinking, feeling, and acting is wholly conformed to the will of God. Simply put, the just are those who are in right standing with God, regardless of circumstances,
