Introduction
Deep-sea fishing is also known by other different terms: off-shore fishing, big-game fishing, sports fishing and open-waters fishing.
Whatever, deep-sea fishing is angling fish in deep ocean waters – 30 metres or deeper well off a distance from the shore.
Deep-sea fishing is entirely a different ball game than most other kinds of fishing. Above all, it might appear intimidating to beginners who had come to know of large and heavy fish, weighing 100 kg or more, fighting for several hours. However, truly speaking, it is a thrilling and dramatic pastime pitching Man, leveraging his knowledge and experience, skills and technology against fish which depends on its innate brutal strength and survival instinct in the fight.
So…it is an exciting and potentially dangerous activity from the moment a fisher drops his fishing line, hook and sinker from the side of the boat to deceptively lure his prey to take the first bite of an irresistible bait.
You have to do a little extra shrewd planning to make it happens but it is all worth it to experience the rush of adrenaline as you start to reel in a potential catch bigger than you would expect.
A Brief Overview of Deep-Sea Bottom Boat Fishing
The first item on a fishing trip to consider is to get a motor boat that is suitable for fishing. An ideal one will be equipped with a radio for communication, rod holders or outriggers, life vest, echo sounder, fish finder, Global Positioning System, and basic fishing gears.
There are benefits of joining a charter boat for fishing. The charter boat skipper will know the local spots for recreational fishing. Over the years, he’ll have the best marks locked up in his GPS; and looking at the lunar calendar or his tidal tables, he will be able to assume correctly the days and tides the fishing is most productive.
His experience will enable him to advise on the best techniques for each mark, the most productive lures and best baits, and which fishing rigs to use for any particular species.
So, there’s much to be said for going boat fishing in this way.
But whatever boat you’re fishing from, there are three ways you can use a boat:
Underway.
In this way, the best saltwater fishing technique to use is trolling.
Boat on drift.
In this way, either jigging, freelining or bottom fishing is the way to go.
Anchored boat.
For this, bottom fishing or jigging will be your best chance to hook up fishes.
So, let’s get to the nitty gritty of the ways of fishing on a boat, starting with ...
Trolling
This involves towing a lure - or a carefully rigged dead or live bait (e.g. Horse Mackerel ), some distance behind a moving boat. On the face of it, trolling is a simple boat fishing technique, but you’ll need to think about which simple handline be best for this or a specialized outfit is preferred. There are also other considerations concerning the sort of lures to use or
