About this ebook

Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952), author of the modern spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi and widely regarded as the father of Yoga in the West, contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. Arriving in America from his native India in 1920, he established Self-Realization Fellowship that same year, and devoted his life to helping people of all races and creeds to realize and express more fully in their lives the beauty, nobility and divinity of the human spirit.

Recognized from the beginning as a landmark work in its field, Autobiography of a Yogi has been in continuous print since its initial publication more than 75 years ago, and remains one of the most important, and most readable, works on Yoga and Eastern spiritual thought. Among Sri Yogananda’s other publications are acclaimed interpretations of the four Gospels, (The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You), the Bhagavad Gita (God Talks With Arjuna), and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (Wine of the Mystic: A Spiritual Interpretation); a three-volume anthology series (Collected Talks and Essays on Realizing God in Daily Life); two collections of poetry and prayer; and numerous volumes of spiritual counsel.

An award-winning documentary film about his life and teachings, Awake: The Life of Yogananda, was released in 2014.

Today, the spiritual and humanitarian work begun by Paramahansa Yogananda continues under the direction of Brother Chidananda, president of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India.

Paramahansa Yogananda

The Spiritual Legacy of Paramahansa Yogananda

Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952) is widely recognized as one of the preeminent spiritual figures of our time, and the influence of his life and work continues to grow. Many of the religious and philosophical concepts and methods he introduced decades ago are now finding expression in education, psychology, business, medicine, and other spheres of endeavor — contributing in far-reaching ways to a more integrated, humane, and spiritual vision of human life.

The fact that Paramahansa Yogananda’s teachings are being interpreted and creatively applied in many different fields, as well as by exponents of diverse philosophical and metaphysical movements, points not only to the great practical utility of what he taught. It also makes clear the need for some means of ensuring that the spiritual legacy he left not be diluted, fragmented, or distorted with the passing of time.

Paramahansa Yogananda personally chose and trained those close disciples who formed the Self-Realization Fellowship Publications Council, giving them specific guidelines for the preparation and publishing of his teachings. The members of the SRF Publications Council (monks and nuns who have taken lifelong vows of renunciation and selfless service) honor these guidelines as a sacred trust, in order that the universal message of this beloved world teacher will live on in its original power and authenticity.

The Self-Realization Fellowship name and the SRF emblem (shown above) were originated by Sri Yogananda to identify the organization he founded to carry on his worldwide spiritual and humanitarian work. These appear on all Self-Realization Fellowship books, audio and video recordings, films, and other publications, assuring the reader that a work originates with the organization founded by Paramahansa Yogananda and faithfully conveys his teachings as he himself intended they be given.

    s Note

It is with deep satisfaction that we offer this treasury of poems by Paramahansa Yogananda. The present volume fulfills a long-standing desire to restore to print those poems of his that were published in earlier years under the title Songs of the Soul, and to bring together under that title many of Paramahansaji’s other poems from various Self-Realization publications, past and present.

Considerable thought and research have gone into the preparation of this edition. Original writings and transcripts were compared with variant renderings introduced by early editors, and by Paramahansaji himself; for he would sometimes pen corrections and creative variations that came to him when rereading a poem, or interpolate a fresh inspiration while reciting a passage in the course of a lecture or devotional service. The number of such variations in a poem is generally proportionate to the frequency of its use. In many cases they are slight — a more precise word, a different turn of phrase, occasionally a deletion (or addition) of a thought, or of certain lines, to fit a particular context. The present endeavor has been to adhere to Paramahansaji’s original handwritten or spoken version; and from the modifications he introduced, to retain those that substantially clarify his thought or otherwise add to the beautiful imagery of his inspiration.

We were happy to find and restore not only illustrative words and phrases, but also entire lines or stanzas that had been omitted from these poems when they were originally published. The following are a few examples:

In the selection, Flower Offerings, some of the phrases omitted or changed in
