    About Rough Guides:

Published in 1982, the first Rough Guide – to Greece – was created by Mark Ellingham and a small group of friends who couldn’t find a guidebook to meet their needs. Combining a contemporary, journalistic style with a thoroughly practical approach to travellers’ needs, the immediate success of the book spawned a series that rapidly covered dozens of destinations. These days, Rough Guides include recommendations from budget to luxury and cover more than 120 destinations worldwide, all regularly updated by our team of ever curious, roaming writers. These Rough Guide Minis may be small, but they are packed with information and inspiration and offer amazing value for money.

A Perfect DAY IN NEW YORK

    9.00am

Breakfast. Enjoy the quintessential breakfast of New Yorkers – bagel, lox, and cream cheese – at Katz’s Delicatessen on the Lower East Side. After breakfast, stroll down Ludlow where you can window-shop the hip neighborhood’s boutiques.

    10.15am

Lower East Side origins. Just a couple of doors down from Delancey on Orchard Street is the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Here you can step back in time and learn about the immigrants who originally populated the Lower East Side with a visit to the tenement building built in 1863. You can tour recreated homes of former residents who lived here between the 1860s and 1980s.

    11.15am

Walk to Brooklyn. Continue heading south, through bustling Chinatown, to the Brooklyn Bridge entrance at the end of Centre Street. Cross the bridge via the walkway to arrive in Brooklyn at the other side of the East River. It takes around a half hour to cross the bridge, or a little more if you stop to take in the view.

    12.30pm

Pizza perfect. A Brooklyn institution, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria (1 Front Street; exit the bridge via the first stairs) is a must. After lunch, wander down Old Fulton Street. Grab an ice cream from Ample Hills Creamery (1 Water Street) before strolling the promenade along the East River in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The views of lower Manhattan are picture-perfect.

    2.30pm

Old Masters in the afternoon. Take the subway to the Upper East Side. The temporary Frick Madison (945 Madison Avenue at 75th Street) is a wonderful museum, much more manageable than the nearby Met. The collection includes works by artists including Rembrandt, Vermeer and Gainsborough. Note that the collection should move back to its original home, the mansion of Henry Frick, at the end of 2023/early 2024.

    4.30pm

Central Park. After the Frick, take a walk through Central Park, which is just across Fifth Avenue. There is an entrance at 72nd and Fifth Avenue. Stroll to the Lake, Strawberry Fields or the Shakespeare Garden.

    6.30pm

Dinner time. Head to one of the best steakhouses in the Times Square neighborhood, Charlie Palmer Steak NYC, for the pre-theater prix-fixe menu. Or try the legendary Sardi’s in the heart of New York’s Theater District for dinner and a pre-show cocktail.

    8.00pm

Broadway. Hit the Great White Way and enjoy one of the many Broadway or off-Broadway performances.

    10.30pm

City lights. Top off your day with a perfect panoramic view of the city with all its sparkling lights from Top of the Rock on the 69th floor of the Rockefeller Center. Or head to the on-site bar, Bar SixtyFive, for cocktails with a view.

    Overview

First-time visitors to New York usually come with wide eyes and high expectations. The quintessential urban landscape – the Big Apple – does not disappoint. No matter what it is you are after, you will find it: great theater, marvelous museums, luxurious hotels, fascinating history, exciting nightlife, sumptuous dining. Peace and quiet can even be found, in the rooms of high-rise hotels far above the teeming streets, or by venturing into the upper reaches of Central Park, or walking out onto the terrace overlooking the Hudson River at the Cloisters.

    ‘The city’

New Yorkers refer to Manhattan as ‘the city’, even though they identify the other boroughs by name. For addresses, ‘New York, New York’ means Manhattan.

At first, New York can be a little overwhelming, however
